Default CD player replacement for CR-1

My 92 coupe still has the stock Porsche CR-1 AM/FM Cassette player. I would like to replace it with an in-dash AM/FM CD player but most of the units I have seen look like "Las Vegas at night". Is any one aware of an understated (mostly black) CD player that would look reasonably stock in a 12 year old car?

None of the above...go for the original look and upgrade your Blaupunkt!

I have an Alaska and it looks and sound great. I can send some pics if you want.

The Nakamichi CD400 would be my vote (at least under $400 range). Aside from it's superb CD sound quality (24 bit DA converter), the non-techno look and amber lights are two features definitely worth considering.

Here's a pic of my interior after installation.

Here's one off of Nakamichi's web site. The factory look is one of the main reasons why I've choosen it over others.

Go for Becker Mexico Pro. Thats what Porsche are using now, along with Ferrari & Lambourghini!! Probably a little bit more than $400 though.

Peter:

I'll say it again: That's a great shot of your dash lit up and a great choice for a very factory looking aftermarket head unit.

I had incredibly bad experience several years ago with a $700 Nakamichi cassette unit (admittedly about 10 years ago, but man was that a lot of money back then). I rarely used the cassette unit, and the piece of s*&t broke literally a week or two after the 1 year warranty (keep in mind this was a car driven only maybe half the year on the weekends). The Company would do nothing to repair the unit even given the "like new" condition of the unit, and I was forced to pay an outside place a couple hundred bucks to fix the unit (which then broke again). Sorry to post this, but even 10 years later I will firmly say I'll never buy a piece of crap like Nakamichi.

Well prices on good head units have come way down now 10 years later. I bought an Alpine CD unit on ebay brand new for I think about $135! It works great, and looks OK. It looks much better than most of the ugly units out there- I have no idea why all the manufacturers designed the units to look like a "bling bling system" or "las vegas style" like you mention. The Mcintosh units look very nice and conservative, but I think they are pricy. If I had the budget, I would have loved to get one of them as Mcintosh makes some great home stuff (but then again, that was my line of thinking when I bought the Nakimichi )

For the money, I'm very satisfied with my Alpine.

By the way, I bought a Rockford Fosgate amp, which I had mounted to a board strapped to the gas tank- its great as the trunk carpet fits right over and there is no sign of it! Very clean installation! I got the idea from a fellow rennlister who was kind enough to describe what he did and post the pictures of how he mounted his amp- I printed the whole thread and took it to my stereo installation shop!

I also got all stock sized- speakers (MB Quart) which are very discreet and look stock as well with their plain speaker grills. The sound is fine for the car- not enough bass for my taste, but heck I'm in a 911 and most of the time I'm listening to the music out back The radio upgrade was more for longer trips (and my original CD1 unit gave out)

Another vote for the Nak from me - I've had one for 6 months or so - sounds great, looks the part and I only paid 300USD for it (some retailer on eBay).

I have a feeling they were bought out (by Harman Audio?) in the last few years. Perhaps that might explain the differing old/new opinions...

Dave.

Upgrade you Blau or go to the Alpine single CD. I have done both, Alpine in my 964 and upgraded Blau in my M491. Neither one cost more than $250.00 installed. Low profile look, no bling and very good audio.
