Hello all, interesting topic for discussion here. With 964 prices where they are, I don't think I'm the only one contemplating jumping ship and picking up something newer. Before I get attacked, YES I understand these are two VERY VERY different cars, but they both have something in common - fun factor. Many of us are not set on a certain "type" of fun - rowing through gears on an old 911 is fun some days, blasting down backroads in a GT3 is equally as fun in different ways. So this leads me to my question...in terms of A: future value, and B: ownership experience...thoughts on a nicely sorted 964 vs 997.1 GT3?

Selling the 964 plus 20-30g on top could land a nice GT3. Help me talk myself out of it, lol. And no, I can't afford to own both together..........yet.

The 997 GT3 has been a dream car of mine for quite a few years now. Over that time, I drove some pretty quick and capable cars on the road. If you are talking road car only, in my opinion, the fun factor fades quick with such a capable car on the road. I mean, breaking the speed limit with your 1st to 2nd gear shift is not exactly ideal. The older, slower cars let you wind the engine out some. Everyone is going to have different opinions on this, but I think "most" 964 owners would regret the decision down the road. Even thought that GT3 is SO badass. Just my thoughts!!

I've thought about it quite a bit. I'd want a .2 if I were to go for it. The 997 is still similar in size (at least not huge like the 991), and I could even deal with the wing on a daily basis. The power, revs, handling are all a couple notches higher so it's very tempting. Oh the sounds. A future classic. Of course I'd want to push it and feel the magic, but sooner or later that would unfortunately mean I'd end up in jail. A bunch of RLers own both, so that says a lot about how they compliment each other.

At the end of the day, as the says goes: it's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow.

That thought is always in the back of my head. But gotta stick with the 964 since my wife loves the car.

I was cross shopping both, but ultimately bought the 964. The 997 was too effortless. I wanted more involvement.

Need both. The only 2 you need.

964 properly set up is a joy to drive. It's quick enough handles good but ultimately it's an old car.

GT3 has all the same feel but does everything better.

If I had to choose it would be GT3.

964RS is a whole different experience. Hope I never have to sell that car. The pinnacle of Porsche. So good.

i'd take a 964, because i'm looking for a classic car experience, you really can't compare the 2 at all

Yea, I've noticed a lot of people rocking the 964 + 997 GT3 combo. Out of all the Porsche's I've driven, those 2 (in a variety of different variants) are the ones that have spoken to me the most. 911R high on the list too. Every Porsche is special but those 2 generations really nailed it.

What I really need is a 964 Carrera RS and a 997.2 RS 4.0 combo!! Now...what are .1 GT3s going for now anyway, 80s/90s? Which bank to rob?

Was just talking to my cousin about this recently. He just bought a 997.1 turbo cabriolet and just isn't as happy with it as he thought he'd be. Pines for his old NA Miata. In the long list of pretty serious performance cars he's owned, the slowest is still the benchmark he's trying to get back to, except now he's got kids and wants his fun car to be a 2+2.

Absolutely. The ultimate is driving a fast car, fast - but that totally removes the whole "street-car" scenario.

lately wondering if better than a McLaren MP4 or a Viper.
not selling the 964. Too much fun. I would sell it if it was stock.

if 3.6 i would go for the 996 Gt3.
I liked the .2 better on track. Liked, not faster (didn’t measure laptimes).
no sunroof, 3.8, better interior, revised suspensions.

drive both if u can, you shouls feel the difference.
