I sold my 996TT a while ago, and now I am building a 964, I think it is a matter of preference Quite frankly, the more Porsches you drive, the better life is! IMO.

The 996 interior with full leather and PCM is like a five star hotel compared to a 964 with modern refinement & creature comforts. Love my 964 for what it is but a base 996 makes it feel like a dinosaur. Still remember what a monster the twin turbo was back in the early 2000's. Still is nearly 20 years later. Definitely a "poster car" of my late teens.

I think you may be missing the point that a 964 is worth substantially more than a 996 if the cars are in comparable condition. If anyone wants a 996 because they think it's a superior car that's their opinion and prerogative, but trading straight up is not exactly a financially savvy move.

Op, if you want a 996 sell your 964 first and have your pick of the litter with some cash left over.
