Default Puzzling noise

Hi,

I have heard a very puzzling noise twice today, it was when idling and it lasted 10-20 seconds each time. It sounded like something was rubbing somewhere in the engine and was moderately loud. It went away and the car was driving just fine.

I did a bit of detective work tonight and could not find anything loose in the engine or reproduce the noise while idling in the garage. Then I noticed this scratch on the fan hub...

... could it be related? Something off with a bearing?

Thanks!

Likely the fan blades are starting to split. A replacement is in your near future.

That sounds like it could be the fan hub bearing to me. If so, it’s a great time to covert to an RS hub.

Here’s what a
can sound like.

Good advise above but also check your heater blower motor. When they seize up it makes and awful noise as well.

With scratches like that, check the fan blades to see if they are delaminating, the bearing maybe be on its way out also. Mine would do a noise intermittently and I could not figure out what it was, it was only when I did a post winter check before putting it back on the road that I noticed the scratches on the fan housing and saw that the blades were falling apart. New fan and bearing, plus new belts and voltage regulator for good measure and I was back in business.

Yeah but that won't scratch the fan housing like this, so different problem altogether.
