Restoring my '92 964 cup
I wanted to share/document the restoration of my 1992 964 cup. I will add more info as progress is made.
I bought the car in the fall of 2006 from fellow PCA racer Jerry Greene I won't say exactly what I paid, but suffice it to say, it was much less than the current values; I am sure that Jerry kicks himself for every selling me the car!
I raced the car in PCA and SVRA up through last fall, 2018. The car was unbelievably reliable and very fun to drive. The cups can certainly turn fast times, but it takes a lots of effort by the driver. Many folks thought it was nuts to be still be driving a car like this at 10/10th. The car was a workers choice machine, garnering me a total of 6 workers choice awards over the years.
Over the years I have attempted to learn as much as I could about the history of the car, and here's what I know. The car was originally purchased and raced by Josef Precthl, who I believe was a doctor of some sorts. He raced the car with Obermaier racing. He did much of the 1992 German Carrera cup, and then the inaugural Supercup in 1993. I have the Wagenpass, so I can see all the cool tracks it ran on from the Norisring to Spa to Monaco. There is actually video in the 1993 Supercup videos of the car going around the hotel hairpin at Monaco! There is also a black & while photo of the car in the the 1993 Porsche sport book, and it also appears on the 1993 Supercup poster. The car was driven by Harold Grohs one time as well. Mr Prechtl also apparently had bought a 1990 cup, also in Rubystone red, that was crashed, but has since been restored; I have not seen the documentation to verify this earlier car.
After Mr. Prechtl, the car was raced in other series by amateurs, before being imported to the US. Jerry was the 2nd owner in the US (4th overall) and I am now the 5th owner.
The car's original livery used a yellow arrow. When I bought the car, I did the same livery, but with the green arrow, for no other reason than to be different. I also, at the time, did not have the the original Prechtl business logos, so I made up something that I thought looked reasonable close to the screen grabs I was able to take form the 1993 videos of the car. I also included what I considered some funny, albeit broken, german phrases . I have since found the actual logos from a 1994 model of another Prechtl car. During this restoration, I will be returning the car to the original livery.

Yep, this update took a loooong while. But the car is done and home! Turned out great (IMO). I need to put a muffler on it as it still has the cat delete, primary delete and secondary delete racing setup which is insanely loud for a car with no interior (though it does sound glorious with a helmet on).
Will try to take a few more pics in the coming weeks. And I am glad that Jerry sold the car to me way back in the winter of 2006/2007!

The disassembly is underway. Car will taken down to the bare chassis and then painted in the original Rubystone Red. We'll be trying to be as original as possible, so for example, we won't paint the bottom of the car and merely let the overspray drift to give some cover. The Matter cage sticker is being preserved, but the rest of the car will be totally repainted. The various hole that have been drilled will be plug welded, and body damage from all the years of hard racing repaired as well. I will leave some things that I believe add to the story/patina of the car. For example, the 1993 Supercup was the first year to allow airjacks. These were not delivered from the factory, so teams had to add them. Obermaier racing had at least 3 cars in the Supercup series. I believe my car was the first car they attempted to fit airjacks on, because there are remanants of making a mistake. Specifically it appears the attempted to put the front airjack right in front of the fuel tank, before realizing that the tank would interfere with the airjack! The eventually located the front airjack in the forward part of the trunk.
Phot showing aijack “mistake” and the proper placement on the front of the car. Original “fix” was an aluminum plate that was silicone over the hole in the trunk.
Close-up of the airjack remnants and the hole in the front trunk now repaired but still visible.

As the car was stripped, the body damage became more evident. There was at least a 1/2” of body filler on the passenger side front and rear fenders. All the cups with history were hit at some point and this one is no exception. I always find it comical when cup owners claim there’s have never been hit. Time for some new fenders!

Car is now in primer, and the 18" Speedline wheels that were used in the '93 suupercup series are getting restored as well. All caught up to current status, so updates will come as they happen from now on!

Very cool project and great to see the car is being restored to its former glory.
So what will you do with it once the restoration is complete, show it at various events or maybe some AX and DE?
