Default Windshield trim removal?

Hi All,

Searched the forums but found lots of conflicting evidence, so looking to see if anyone has some current information.

Have my 964 cab almost ready for paint. Started with a bumper, switched up some parts (aero mirrors and handles), now it's become a full respray instead. I have no rust around the windshield, but want to remove it a) JUST in case there is a tiny bit of rust and b) don't want a masking line.

Is the glass sealed/glued in by itself or does the seal hold it in place?
Can I remove just the trim and leave the glass in until after paint?
Best method to remove the trim? It will be replaced so can cut it out.

Thanks in advance....

The seal holds the glass. It wasn't until the 993, that the glass is glued in. Do you have the factory workshop manuals? The instructions for removing and installing the windshield is on 64-1

Thank you - that was part of the conflicting info I came across. Was hoping it was glued so we could remove the trim then still be able to drive it to the glass shop after everything was finished. Trying to avoid having it in the paint shop with the windshield for as little a time as possible.

I will also check the manuals for more info.

Thanks!

Per the manual, the airbag cars have the gasket bonded to the glass, and then the gasket bonded to the windshield frame. The non-airbag cars do not have the adhesive.

I can confirm....just picked up a used OEM windshield from an airbag car and there are still pieces of gasket bonded to the glass....cleaning it will be fun

Op, there is also a wire on the lower passenger side of the glass that you do not want cut (a few inches in from the lower corner). I can measure the exact position if you would like.

That would be helpful - thank you!

Maybe the wrong wording.. Trim/seal is what I want to remove, the rubber part that overlaps onto the frame. I plan on buying a new seal anyway so might as well remove before paint

The front glass is sitting in the rubber gasket and the gasket is sitting on the metal lip of the front window opening.
In order to remove the trim you have to remove the glass... unlike in modern cars the rubber gasket is what is holding the glass in place.
