Default backfires through exhaust alternates sides

Backfires through exhaust..more so when cold. Idles pretty rough at first and then smooths out but the backfiring continues. Seems to get better when the car gets warm but the interesting thing is - it seems to pop through the exhaust mainly on one side or the other...and then at some point while it's idling, it will then start backfiring through the other side. It maintains its idle for the most part.

Ideas? No, I haven't dove in yet to look at plugs or wires...or anything Just want to get some ideas first.

I would check the "dizzy" belt (inside the distributor) you might be running on only one set of plugs

When you said that you checked the distributor belt, what did you check? It sounds like your distributor belt may have slipped and the rotors are "out of time". With both distributor caps off, turn the engine to TDC at #1. Do both rotors point to the triangular points in the distributor casting? They should.

I’d look for a vacuum leak, perhaps oil breather hoses.
