Default Rear quarter-window rash

Today I had a PPI done on a nice little 964. The only body issue we found, really, was in a place I've never heard anyone on Rennlist mention, so I thought I'd ask --

On the frame at the bottom of the rear quarter windows a piece of aluminum (?) lies flat against the top of the fender to create a weather seal. On this car, the flat black finish on this strip had a rash, small bubbles in the black paint, as if it were rust. There were 3 areas on the left side, each about an inch long, and 1 area on the right side.

The body guy said he would repair by removing the window, and the strip, then strip the finish down and refinish it. He didn't suspect there would be rust underneath and said it looked to be a problem with the anodizing of the aluminum.

He and the mechanic said they've never seen this problem on a Porsche, so I wondered if any of you have ever heard of it, fixed it, are aware of any complications with it, etc.?

Thanks, J

I think it's fairly common. The Blue Shadow's car had it (since repaired) and I've seen others. IIRC, Peter Morgan also mentioned this in one of the short 'Tried and Tested' reports in the latest 911&PW. If the BS's is anything to go by - very quick and easy fix, with no associated rust, etc.

JoeW,
My 1990 C4 has a little of this - not much. I've had the car for 2-years now and it had the small rash when I bought it. It has not progressed any further so I haven't done anything about it as yet.
If you decide to go ahead and get the repair work , let us know how it was resolved.

Cheers
Alister

C4TT, okay I'll keep my eye on it.

I'm keeping my hopes on a short leash, John. When I'm sure I'll take my camera along ... and a flame thrower to melt the snow! J
