Default When did 964s get aero mirrors?

Looking for some model change/production timeline info on the 964. Interested in learning more about the following...

- What month in 1990 did production start on the Targa model?
- What year/month were flag mirrors replaced with aero mirrors?
- When did cars receive the updated dash design (with the lower "lip") as apposed to the G body dash....I'm guessing this came at the same time as airbag steering wheel?

Thanks for the info.

1) Likey late August or at the start of September 1990 for MY1991 Targas
2) MY1992
3) Varianxe between airbag and non-airbag cars.

For what little I know anyway.

The targa and cab models were introduced for the 1990MY along with the air bag wheel and dash. The aero mirrors were first released in 1991 on the turbo and later in 1992 on the NB 964. If your 89 - 91 NB has aero mirrors they were swapped by the PO and were not installed by the factory.

Although the 959 had an aero style mirror it isn''t the aero mirror we have on our cars. Interestingly the Dauer 962 street car I am helping my friend rebuild uses 964/993 style aero mirrors. The 928GTS and 968 also received the aero mirrors in 1992 although the bases are different to fit the doors.

I guess you could say that but Porsche had aero style mirrors dating all the way back to the 356.

Don't forget the Audi RS2!

Some documents referred to the new mirrors as "959-like." But yes, the shape is totally different and the 959 ones are taller in order to see over the rear wing.

The different kneepad was required for a glovebox, as the passenger airbag took the place of the old glovebox. It's worth noting that in RoW markets, airbags were not standard. Non-airbag cars would still receive the older kneepad.

Fun fact: the airbag-style kneepad is incompatible with manual window cranks. Porsche specially modified the kneepad for those very few cars that got airbags and manual windows.

^^^ I don't think I ever saw a US spec 964 without power windows. DO you have any further info on this?

Dunno if it helps but my 1992 C2 coupe was manufactured in June, 1991. So, aero mirrors were being installed by then.

That is correct, I don't think crank-window 964s were ever officially available in North America.

It was on RoW cars. Specifically the ones where manual windows were standard but airbags were optional. I've only seen the crank-window / airbag combo on the TS Leichtbau, although in theory I think it was possible on the 993 GT2. I don't think the 964/993 RS were available with airbags (that isn't to say you couldn't ask and receive), but could be wrong.

Airbags were a roughly 6k USD option (adjusted for inflation), so it was seldom selected. I would imagine less than a dozen cars have this combo.
