My 964 kit...
 

I'm not much for posting, as I usually show projects when they are finished. That said, this group seems uniquely supportive and engaged, so I post the beginnings of my next year's work. I started with a high-mileage 1994 C2, and took everything off. Welded up a dolly and sent the body off to a friend to strip. I made a list of parts and the cartons began arriving. I expect to have it running late next summer if all goes approximately as planned. I've built/restored a lot more airplanes than cars, and am finding the relative simplicity a blessing. Below is a shot today of the body in its most basic form, and a list of the stuff I'm working with. Hmmm. I purchased a Revell model kit of a 911 about two years ago. Still haven't opened the box. I hate you. LOL

As a pilot and 964 owner I'll be watching this.

I'm sure you'll enjoy working without the FAA looking over your shoulder!! Less paperwork too.

It was a scratched up dark purple blue - it had been repainted once poorly. It will be a 1969 VW color - pale blue/grey.

To the previous question - the first plane I built was a Pitts Model 12 - and it turned into my forum screen name - so no I don't live in Pittsburgh! Model 12 photo enclosed

nterested to know who/how you're doing the Fenn Lane panel. My trusted mechanic and friends all think I'm crazy to remove the sunroof cassette and weld in the Fenn Lane panel. But the weight savings and the additional height are compelling.

I installed the panel. Braced it in from underneath with wood, used TiG with a phosphor bronze filler rod. Needed some hammer/dolly work in the corners, but not an awful job. The roof will need a little filler to have consistent contours, but nothing significant. One of the other forum posts recommended a filler with aluminum to prevent cracking and that's what I used.

On the other hand, removing the sunroof structure is a royal pain - particularly the rear pinch seam. I had most of the interior out, and it still involved some colorful language and a lot of air tools. Ultimately it came out, and I was shocked at both the weight of all the components and the feeling of spaciousness with it gone.

Thanks for that, it's very helpful. I haven't been able to find anyone experienced with the process, and will a go at it this winter on my own. The car will be tracked, so I'm hoping the filler doesn't start cracking down the road... :cheers:
