Default Heat shield removal

Can these shields be removed permanently? Broken welds and noisy.
hey guys these heat shields on my 89 c4 964 are rattling and noisy as hell. Can I take of and leave off? Or am I risking damage to the car?
thanks for your help

Those two shields are removable, but protect the catalyst from direct hit from road spray. They both bolt on.

They aren't welded and you can probably remove them and fix the rattling. The speed nuts they use have a tendency to rust due to heat. The nut will spin in the metal retaining clip and can be a bear to remove or don't seat properly. If they aren't a tight fit they will rattle.

They can be repaired once removed or replaced for stupid money. Something like $6 each or more. When you remove them run a tap through them and a die for the bolts and some copper never cease when installing. It should fix the problem.

The heat shield also protects the tire from heat I wouldn't remove them.

Yep, it's simple to fix the rattle. Leave them in place. They are there for a reason. For the most part the Porsche engineers know what they were doing - these heat shields protect the cat and oxygen sensor and protect the tire from excessive heat.

Rather than paint, I would just media blast them to give them a fresh look. By the time you clean, degrease, prep and paint, you can easily media blast them.
