Default Any feedback from selling on Bring-A-Trailer?

Hey all,

I'm selling my E24 BMW M6 and was just notified by the folks at BAT of their acceptance of my car. Does anyone have feedback on the selling/ buying of a car on BAT?

I haven't sold anything personally but I have a friend who has done really well on a few vehicles. Seems to work best on hard-to-find stuff. I think your car should do well!

Been talking to them for the last day or so. Quick to communicate would be my only feedback at this point.

Here are the basics:
  • Take as many HIGH-Quality pictures as you possible can. From every angle, nook and cranny, interior, exterior, chassis, service records, etc. etc. If you can't do an excellent job, pay a pro. It will pay HUGE dividends!
  • Make a driving video, again see above!
  • If possible get a PPI from a well known M-car expert in your area and post the results.
  • Fix any easy/cost effective items that stand in the way of a sale. For example I see people list cars with hideous aftermarket wheels yet they mention they have the original wheels. Put those back on. Unless your car is heavily modified, original sells best.
  • Review the proposed ad copy BAT sends you. Their copy writers are not subject matter experts, if they put something incorrect there the feedback will go against you as the seller. So make sure it is honest, correct and well balanced.
  • Be VERY visible throughout the auction. Let people know you are available to discuss the car via PM, email, voice, etc and make the car available for an in-person inspection if need be.
  • Have VERY thick skin. You will get great comments but you will also get ill-informed or occasionally just some idiot chiming in. Treat everyone with respect, don't engage in any negativity or name calling. Just be forthright with a sense of humor.
  • OVER disclose anything that is not right with the car. People appreciate that and your price will reflect it.
  • Have fun, it will be your part time job for the week.
PM if you have anymore questions.

I bought mine on BAT from Kelly Moss. They were extremely transparent and flexible throughout the process which gave me confidence to buy a car sight unseen (plus they have a great reputation). As most have mentioned:

1. Take a high volume of quality pictures and avoid using old pictures. After all, who wants to spend $50k+ on one or two crappy pictures? Buyers in different geographic regions will surely appreciate detailed and current pictures.
2. Disclose any issues with the car, no matter how minor. Although if there are truly small items I would fix them opposed to providing a laundry list of minor items to repair.
3. Ignore the negative comments, or provide friendly and accurate corrections. If someone is trolling than most potential buyers can recognize that. Getting in petty battles will not help your reputation which is a key element to most buyers when they are buying cars over the internet.
4. If possible get a PPI. Most buyers may request one before payment, but you will cast a wider net if you provide the PPI results in the post.

Good luck with the sale!

I've sold 2 cars on BAT. Both good experiences. Good advice on previous responses.

The OP is selling his Shark, e24 m6, not a 964.

My friend sold his 993 Turbo and there was some shady stuff that went on. The car should have sold for more but somehow it worked out that the good friend of the guy that runs BaT picked it up cheap as they paid up to cover his reserve.

BAT is well know in the car community. Download The Smoking Tire Podcast by Matt Farah interviewing the owner of BAT Randy Nonnenburg March 29th episode. It is a good listen and will give you some insight of what they are all about and what their business model is. Right ,wrong or indifferent they are the real deal and have provided another tool to globalize the car market which I personally think is a great thing.

I have no afillation to them what so ever

I helped a friend/customer sell a car, and it went very well. As previously stated, high quality pictures ( possibly video too) really aid in getting the top price for a good car that's got nothing to hide.

Get lots of detail shots of problem areas, as that's what serious buyers of niche cars want to see. "Glam shots" are all well and good, but they don't impress dedicated buyers of specialty cars who want to see the good, bad, and ugly.

Nobody wants to get down to brass tacks, only to find the tacks can be picked up with a magnet

Thanks again for all the comments. I agree on the advice and did my best to heed it.

For any interested parties, here's the finished product:
