Default Valve (train) noise - what in the world just happened?

so here is my strange story...
i went home from work (approximately 8 mls).
when I reached home, one valve from the r/h bank was very loud (sounded like a T1 with no oil change since 1987).
restarted the engine after a couple of minutes, noise was still the same.
then I thought to myself “well screw it” and took it out to thoroughly warm up the engine and give it some proper accelerations. right after that, the noise was gone for good...

so what the heck just happened?
oil is 600 miles old, last valve adjustement 14.600mls.

to me it almost seems like there was some inproper oil distribution to one rocker maybe?

did anybody ever here of something like that?

help would be highly appreciated!

Time for a valve adjust to check.

Sticky valves, worn spring... just thoughts, nothing I have experienced.

Maybe the adjustment nut came undone?

That would all
make sense if the sound stayed that way but it didn’t!
A sticky valve came also to my mind.
On a 2 valve engine that would necessarily mean that one cylinder would miss out but that has not been the case.

Not real likely that a valve adjustment went loose, and then adjusted itself close to spec again. Is it possible it was something rattling around on the right hand side of the engine, or if a C4 something in the power steering pump system making a noise?

Zombie is a C2.
The sound was 110% coming from a valve (I used to be an AP/IA).
Well, we‘ll see...
We will be going to Italy tomorrow, so a good 1000mls weekend ahead of us...

If the hydraulic chain tensioner temporarily collapses it will sound like a loose valve.

Oh okay, that doesn‘t sound too well.
Although the noise shouldn't come from the r/h side, right?

Piece of carbon on the valve or seat/sticky valve guide, creates excessive clearance until it gets cleared/loosened up.

The entire right side would be clanking away and sounding like a sewing machine. If the noise sounded more like it was limited to a single valve then its something else.

I am more and more inclined to say that it is the chain tensioner.
So.., on italian highways you have an horrible amount of toll collect stations.
Nevertheless it gives you the chance to listen to your engine quite clearly.
Fact is that the noise is sometimes there, sometimes not at all.
If she makes it through our trip I will do a valve adjustment and tensioner replacement, then we will see.

By the way we met a bunch of Navy SEALS in the town of Portovenere, close to La Spezia.
I have to say, they were the incarnations of @clean cut american kids“!
What a great bunch of guys, hands down!

you think Italy has many - try France...

The mystery is that the noise went away so if it is a mechanical failure shouldn't it have stayed?
How old/bad was the fuel?

I'd agree with @jasonAndreas on this one. I've had chain tensioners make a horrible racket until oil pressure comes up. Then the sound is gone. It mostly happens when parking on an incline causing lower oil pressure at cold startup. Scary sound.
