Default can you name this calliper on this 964?

1990 964 C4 coupe.

The front callipers are black but have an adapter as pictured with 320mm rotor.
Any idea what the deal is with this calliper and what it is from.

For order replacement pads and disc, what are the options? Adapter need to be replaced to?

thoughts appreciated.

Looks like you had an upgrade to 993 calipers

I have a spreadsheet from my conversion in 2014. If you’d like a copy pm me.

How different are they from big reds?

I assume the adapter allows it to fit on in place of stock calliper.

Big Blacks are found on the 993 and 928 S4 and have a 304mm rotor. Big reds are taller and have a 322mm rotor. Caution though, Big Reds could be ordered in Black, so measure your rotors before ordering.
Lots of brake info here https://www.pelicanparts.com/MotorCity/wmv/brakes.htm
Yes, adapter allows the use of Big Blacks or Big Reds.

Were the "big blacks" the standard calliper on a 993 with 304mm rotor?

If the pad measures 48mm x 132mm these are 928 Medium S4 calipers or 91-92 3,3l turbo. If they measure 58mm x 132mm they are 94 turbo 3.6 big blacks/reds. offered in both colors or they are 928GTS big blacks with the feeds and bleeds swapped.

Based on the rotor 4/3 hole pattern they appear to be 91-92 turbo 3.3 If they had the 5/4 hole pattern my guess would be 94 turbo or 928 GTS.

There were 4 versions of that caliper used on multiple versions of Porsche 928S4, 968, 964RS, 964T and 993 all use the same pad Pagid 1204, PFC 0594.08.44
v1 was used on early 928S4
v2 was used on later 928S4 & 968, these have an updated piston seal design used on all subsequent versions
v3 was used on 964RS & 964t, these have the feeds and bleeds swapped wrt the water cooled versions and also have extended pedestal mounts for use w/ 322x32mm rotors as opposed to the 304x32mm rotors used on the water cooled cars, w/o seeing the base of the calipers I can't tell about yours
v4 was used on all the base model 993s these are the same as the 964 versions w/o the extended base mounts so are used on a 304x32mm rotor unless a caliper adaptor is used.

your rotor appears to be a 322x32mm used on the front of 964t & 964RS

Apologies, I totally missed the ~320mm rotor size, in that case it could be from a 964T/964RS as Bill noted above or a 993C4S/993TT/993RS

yes on 964RS or 964 3.3t
no on 993C4S/993TT/993RS, these used a similar but different caliper, they are taller and use Pagid 1842 or PFC 0447.08.17.44 pad
here are examples of all the pads used on 930, 968,928, 964, 993
from the front Pagid Orange 1203, middle Pagid Yellow 1204, back Yellow 1842

The 1842 was used on the front , 928GTS, 964 3.6T, 993tt, 993RS & RSR(base), 993GT2 street, 993C4S

The 1204 was used on the front of 928S4, 944T/S, 968 M030, 964 3.3t, 964RS, 993, 993 2S, rear 993RS & RSR,

the 1203 was used on 930 f/r, 964 f/r, 964RS r, 964 3.3t r, 993 r, 928 r, 944, f/r, 951 f/r, 968 f/r

Right, but I was only referring to the 322mm rotor which I missed in the OP and which can also be found on the 993C4S/993TT/993RS. The pad difference is also highlighted in the link I posted which you gave me a while back.
I'll shut up now and let the expert carry on. Thanks Bill for the wealth of info as usual.

Don't forget the 993s you listed use a 5mm shorter hat and 2 piece rotor.
