Default Oil Temp Gauge help

I recently have been experiencing what I thought were higher than normal oil temps. The oil thermostat was opening at higher than usual temp, so I have gone ahead and bought a new thermostat insert...
Tonight I have discovered that the oil temp needle was resting above the second marking with ignition off (also when gauge removed from vehicle). Unfortunately I didn't take a photo of this...
I removed the gauge and gave it a small shake and the needle slowly made its way back to resting position as shown below:
Can anyone confirm the resting position looks good now? Has anyone experienced this before? (Pics: Not driven for 2 days. Ambient temp approx. 20c/68f)
Thanks!

The second pic looks about right when I compare it to mine with ignition on/engine off.
