Purchase decision
Thinking about getting back into a 964. Been out of the game for almost a decade.
Will probably be at least 8 months to a year before I pull the trigger maybe longer if right car doesn't come along.
So.......at the moment what is the "average" going rate for a nice C2? Could I find a nice one with no mech issues in the 50-60 range?
Thinking of both of these cars.........25+ year old 964 or 2012-13 991s. Anyone owned a 991s and a 964? Which would you choose?
My 997 turbo never lit my fire like my 964 turbo did. So I'm wondering if a 991s would be the same. Great car but just too refined maybe?
There is no prettier car in the world than the original 911 body style to me but I have had three older Porsche's now and I'm getting kind of sick and tired of having to rebuild them all. I am planning to spend enough to get one that is mechanically sound though.
Thanks.....hope to be back in the club one of these days.

a nice sub 100k miles 964c2 coupe is veryn high 50's and to high 60.
i have seen really erally nice one at 80+ but those are outliers.
i do have both 964 and 991 at same time.
991 is ... well maybe too fast and refined. dynamically it's a better car
stylistically, it's a personal choice
for weekend fun car, i take 964.

Welcome back Jerry!
We’ve had some similar Porsches, so must have similar tastes. I have had a 964 of some type for the last 16 years and love working on them. If I were in the US i’d be bidding on the BAT Horizon Blue C2. What a beauty.

I recently had the opportunity to drive a 991 GTS and so I’ll offer my take on it. The 991 is an incredibly capable car and the cornering and acceleration are truly impressive however I felt very distant from the actual driving experience. The best way to describe it was an intense video game.
The other aspect of a modern 911 is the inability to truly exploit its capabilities on public roads without taking risks or getting arrested.
The 964 strikes the perfect balance of performance and old school driver involvement.
Good luck with your search!

just buy one, it’s not that if you change your mind you can’t sell it!

You and I are in the same boat ! Due to a divorce situation, I had to off my 964, 993, and GT3.
After a couple years on the sidelines, I finally got back in the game earlier this year. Pulled the
trigger on a nice clean 991 with 15K miles. Was happy like a pig in sh*t for the first few months,
mostly just to have another 911 to play with. Now that it has been 10 months, I found it time
to be honest with myself. The 991 is a terrific car in SO many ways. However I have to say, I
greatly miss the character of the 964 (and 993).
With that said, I decided just this week that life is short, I am going to off the 991 for both a 964 and 993 in
2018. For a weekend toy, and the limitations of driving on public roads, the character of the 964 / 993
just cant be beat, in my humble opinion.
Full disclosure, my 991 is a weekend toy .......
so I have the luxury of considering the alternatives. If it was a daily driver I would certainly keep it
for the comfort, warranty, etc. etc..

I felt the same way about the Cayman R. It is possible for a car to be too competent. When I drive for fun I want my senses assaulted. The classic 911 looks, the smell of older time interiors with a whiff of hot oil, the touch on the doors, steering wheel and gear lever, all packaged in a drive that doesn't have my eyes fixed on the radar detector.

I'm not knocking the newer Porsche's they are amazing. The 991 in my eyes is the best looking 911 since the 964. But after I sold my 997tt, I've hardly thought about it since and that was probably the closest thing to a super car I'll ever have in my garage. I still lay in bed at night thinking of my 964 turbo. Selling that car was the dumbest thing I've ever done but it was using a quart of oil every 700 miles and a faint whine appeared in the transmission and at the time I just didn't make the money i would have needed to rebuild those big ticket items. I should have just stuck it in the garage under plastic and let it sit till I made more money. I only paid 29000 dollars for it and it was in great shape. I remember the day I got it home I literally sat in the garage for 3 hours drinking some beer and just looking at it. It was the massive realization of a dream. Maybe I'm chasing that feeling that I had then that I'll only get once with a car. I know this 968 just isn't doing it for me, although I think it's beautiful to look at, but it was just to hold me off till we got settled in our new house and I could move up to something better. Now the itch is back and it's gotta be scratched!!!
