Help! Looking at buying a 92 C2
Hello everyone. I’m trying to determine whether to purchase a guards red/cashmere manual 92 C2. This is what I’ve been looking for for nearly 2 years. I’m a current owner of a 92 C2 Cab and like everyone else I’m looking to obtain the coupe.
First the good: It’s a 92 C2 coupe manual it’s owned by a current long time air cooled Porsche mechanic. He has performed some work on my current C2. It has appprox 79K miles with a recent motor rebuild due to excessive oil leaking. Clutch was also replaced at the same time. He said bottom and top end were completely gone through with bearings and seals all being replaced (by him) Original heads pistons etc remain. Price: asking 40K.
The bad: virtually no history on the car, number of owners, service history etc. was tracked and hit a wall damage was to left rear of car. The current owner bought the car this way and was subsequently repaired by him/body shop again with no documentation. This is obviously a gamble purchasing and I would not pay 40K so my question is what is everyone thinking on price and is it worth even pursuing? Car also appears to have mismatched wheels D90 upfront with Fuchs in back very strange. I’m trying to determine if the title is salvage or clean. Also appears to have some pretty gangster aftermarket speakers installed in rear. Thanks everyone.

You could repair/re-do those panels and probably still spend less $$ all-in after getting sorted. I'd make sure the frame is straight though since that's a different ballgame.
This obviously assumes the engine runs strong and you trust your mechanics rebuild skills and all that.

Looks like rear wheels are from a 3.2 Carrera, wrong offset. Also where is the car? If you're in Texas, or the car came from Texas, from all the dirt that is visible I would worry about hurricane flood damage.

What body gaps are you speaking of specifically? I see the right rocker panel and right rear rocker look misaligned but I don’t see anything obvious on other panel gaps. As I stated before the history of the car is unknown other than it has been with the current owner for the past 6+ years (not in Texas). While I do believe he is a competent mechanic since I have seen his work on my own car. As we can all see he doesn’t seem to keep his car in great repair. I would NEVER drive a car with different rims. I think of contractors like this that do great work but drive a beater truck and their personal homes are less than stellar. I’m just trying to figure out if it’s worth a day of my time to travel there and line up a PPI etc. the car is about 9 hours from me. And thanks for the responses everyone

The rear hood is miss-aligned, gap on upper left, also the exhaust pipe is positioned wrong, could be minor, or could point to larger hit in the rear......

Yeah I see your point. Thanks for the keen eye. Those gaps could be pointing to a much larger issue. Would a normal PPI even beable to tell if the frame is straight. Or would it need to go to a body shop as well to check the extent of the old damage. Even at 30K I’m not sure this car is worth it honestly.

I also noticed the panel gaps in the rear. The receiver for the rear lid latch also appears to be missing, painted over or pushed in, it’s usually cad plated.
The interior looks tired for a 79k car. Before doing a PPI I would get the VIN and run a carfax. That will give you and idea of the number of owners, if its a salvage title and any mileage discrepancies.

For sure this car is not worth 40K. I’ll probably start with a car fax or just move along to the next. I am looking for a driver that I can make my own with mods here and there but this might be to much to bite off.

i think of you plan to strip it to bare metal and repaint it it’s a great candidate, otherwise I’d listen to creaturecat.
seeing how the car is I’d be worried about the engine works too...
sometimes its ok to wait and pass.

That car looks to be neglected. I would highly recommend you find a better example unless you can pick it up for under $30k. The little things can add up real fast on a car like this.
