Thinking of buying a 964. Opinions?
Hello All....I'm new to THIS board as I currently own a '79 SC coupe and a '08 997 Turbo coupe.
Came across an '89 964 Carrera 4 COUPE, 100,000 miles, 5 speed, looks to be all original, maybe 2 owners, all documentation since new, including the Window Sticker. VERY clean car. Looks to be loaded and everything is functional. New tires, fully serviced, no leaks, 4-wheel alignment, interior in nice shape, with normal wear. No body repair, though hood has been resprayed..
I'm wondering about an offer price, owner wants mid-40's, but I see Haggerty's valuation tool puts it at between 32 and about 47 for Good and Excellent condition, respectively.
Not being too familiar with the 964, I know it lags slightly behind other 911 models, except the SC.
Based on this info, can anyone make a suggestion as to the value of the car, and perhaps an offering starting point?
Thanks!!

Here’s my take on the 964 having owned one for only 5 months.
The 964 is a modern take on the old school 911. It retains some of the best parts of the older air cooled cars including the feel, handling characteristics, build quality, looks and of course the engine. But it also brings in some modern amenities including a decent AC, power steering, more modern suspension and with it much better handling. The engine has much more power and low end torque is excellent which makes it very easy to drive around town and very fun on the back roads. It is heavier than its predecessors due to safety and comfort features but once you adjust it’s a genuinely fun and capable car.
As with any Porsche, get a PPI to make sure everything checks out.

Given the info provided, I don't think the seller is out of line on his pricing. Put it this way--I have a similar car (but 49K miles), and I'd never take mid-40s for it.

Rob, what color is it?
Keep in mind that at $30k there is a check from Los Angeles ready, that's the bottom price. Regardless of what Hagerty is saying.

964's are great cars but be sure to get a PPI. These cars can be very reliable when properly maintained. But very expensive to fix if not. You want to make sure you are getting a good car.
Good luck with your search.

Get a solid PPI. If the car is extra nice and needs nothing - low to mid $40s is reasonable. Price goes down if things pop up in PPI. Make sure to check the AWD system. Also ask if they addressed the head gaskets. Most have been fixed by now. http://www.instant-g.com/products/36...gasket-failure

I love my 964. I looked long and hard at a number of car makes and models before I decided on a 964.
I bought mine back in 2010 when nobody really cared about these cars. I wanted a 911 because... I’ve always wanted one.

I looked at 993’s, but decided that I did not want to deal with trying to find competent shops to align the rear suspension. I wanted more classic 911 handling vs modern handling in a 911 body. I studied the transmission gearing in both cars and decided that 993’s have gearing that is pretty long for US roads where the speed limits are typically ~60 to 70mph - the 993 is geared for the higher speeds of the autobahn, in my opinion, whereas the 964 had a tighter set of ratios more appropriate for twisty back roads.
I liked that 964’s retain the more classic 911 shape, vs the one-generation shape of the 993 (although the 993 is certainly a pretty car). I preferred the 964 bumpers over the accordion bumpers on ‘80’s 911’s.I wanted an air-cooled 911. I wanted fuel injection. I wanted coil spring suspension, not torsion bars.In the end, the 964 was really the only choice for me, and I have loved it from the first test drive. It has a lot of character and great build quality. It’s small and maneuverable, and is fast enough to be fun, yet slow enough to need to be driven with commitment (also fun). It sounds fantastic. It looks fantastic. It’s an awesome ride. 964 - Accept No Substitute.

Here's a nice comp. Fellow RL car. More miles but a recent 2017 full rebuild (not cheap) on the engine and some other tasteful mods.

Yep its a great car, I have a few cars including 964 C4, 911_50, F16M, R8v10, AR 105 GTV. I get asked all the time which car do I prefer to drive the most. Ans is always the same-964! I bought the car as a project car that i can modify tastefully. Rebuilt the trans due to failed planetary gear, then rebuilt the top end due to one head stud sheared. Mod 7 steering wheel, Bilstein HD and HnR springs, Ruf speediness, Custom cam grind, SW chip, Fabspeed RSR cat delete with heat, solid engine mounts, various rennline and rothsport bits later. Spent time setting up the alignment and corner balancing according to what i wanted.
Ownership is not cheap! Be prepared to spend some money and time, and you will be rewarded. Get as much history on the car that you can. PPI it, budget for the unexpected.
The C4 is planted! Keep the front soft and rear firm and you can drive it around corners with the throttle. Raw, visceral, completely connected to driver.
I wouldn't fuss about too much about that price, sounds fair if the car checks out.
Cheers

Thanks for all the replies. As stated, I currently have a 911SC so not unfamiliar with older 911's, I also have a 997 TT. This car has been maintained since new (just over 100k miles) with all the records. I'll have to check on the head gaskets, no mention of it in the ad. Hopefully I'll take a look at it this week. Definitely a PPI.
Thanks again

Yes in fact he said "comps", to compare and have a reference since the mileage is similar (I think).
Anyhow if this says anything, the 964 is what I take out Fri to Sun - Mon to Thur is for the 993
The 964 really reminds me of the first times with the Honda S2000. I loved that car and I never experienced that same feeling...until the 964.

OP - get the 964 and you will have an amazing 911 collection! SC + 997TT. Wow, that's cool already.
Great post.
I took GoKart on my "North Loop" once... all he wanted to do was stop and take pictures of his car! Just kidding. Fun day.
