How bad is this 964 Targa with Turbo Flares? Yay or Nay?
Hello everyone, so i'm checking out a 1990 964 Targa, the car is real clean and runs great, but it looks straight out of a cheesy 90's movie with those fake Turbo flares (welded on) and ugly turbo wing..chrome wheels..everything is done "right" but definitely not the kind of look i'd go for.
Its terrible seeing what has been done to such a rare beautiful car..is there a way to put this car back to original stock without spending crazy $$? i'd be buying the car to resell later on (hope this doesn't turn into a dealer insult thread) but not sure looking like this it would appeal to any enthusiast..its sure doesn't appeal to me! The owner has had it 20 years so he actually thinks that these flares increase its value..its sitting next to my stock silver targa and it looks beastly & wrong compared to it.
WHY WHY WHY would anyone do this..look how sunk in the rear wheels look for example...its just wrong!!

Why not just change the rims to accommodate the extra space, and change out the decklid to one of your liking? IMO, it looks fine, but does need some wider rims to fill in that gap.
If your goal is to make money on it in the short/long run I don't see that happening with the work required to change it back to stock. Cutting fenders, welding on narrow body fenders, paint blending or entire respray, decklid change, etc.

ditch the wing, put some correct offset wheels that aren't chrome on there and I think it would look ok.
the flares are a bit much, but they aren't the end of the world

I like it
Turbo bodywork seems to be be related to what 911s first attracted your attention. For me it was 70s race cars. I like them all wide. An early longhood conversely looks like the karmann Ghia our next door neighbor owned in the 60s. I know that opinion isn't widely held, but to each his own.
Proper wheel offset, get rid of the wing and turbo badge, and someone will love it.

Yup, lose the wing and get non-chrome wheels with proper offset and THEN it will look good and likely command more $$. For some reason though, I like darker colours on wide-bodies.

You need to look at COBALT's threads on his track car...a Wide Bodied 964 with Narrow Body driveshafts/etc. equals a track monster...you can fit wider wheels under the fenders without offset/rubbing issues providing more grip.
Take the ugly spoiler off and put on an original powered spoiler and you have a beautiful curvy Targa...I Love it. If the widebody fenders are 965 fenders and were done right....I beautiful car.

hmmm, you guys are starting to steer me in the direction of actually buying this car lol..
What kind of off sets would fit here? would have to be huge..maybe get spacers?
I suppose the deck lid i can just buy a regular 964 decklid correct? will it fit>?

Three Wheelin'
Turbo Cup 1s style rims would look good and are period correct. 17 X 7 and 17 X 9 (not sure the offset)

Take a look at this thread here (Cobalt's post #4)

I would query Cobalt about his set-up...as far as wheel set-up as I think Turbo (WB) wheels would fill the space right, but you aren't taking advantage of the narrow body driveshafts.
Looking at the photos - the way in which the lower panels meet the body and wrap around the quarters looks a little off...as does the front bumper...looks ill fitted. As you deal with these cars alot to sell, I am sure you better than I...hard to tell in photos.
BTW - what is the mileage on the car?

If the turbo-look was done right after the fact, why not keep it? Ditch the wing and wheels and run with it.
But... what's showing that points it not being a factory wide body? The bumpers, fenders, and rockers look correct for the most part.

IMO the worst part of the car is the turbo badge. What engine work was done?
The big question is what parts were used? If these are all factory parts (bumpers, rockers, flairs etc) and done correctly it can be a nice ride. If they are cheap glass parts I would pass. The tail appears to be a 993 turbo S tail also used on the 993 aero package. Is it factory or aftermarket? If factory you might be able to sell it for some good money at least enough to buy a stock rear lid in working condition. If not it is wall art or a few hundred. Looks like an aftermarket unit though.
The front suspension appears to be set to the narrow body or inboard settings. If so you can adjust the suspension to the outboard turbo settings which will push the front wheels out otherwise you will need spacers to use the stock 17" cup I's 7" ET55 wheels or 18" speedline which were 8" ET 52. The car will handle much better with the wider front track. Rear track will require spacers even if you use the 17" X 9" ET55 or the 18" x 10" ET 61. The 3.8RS rear wheels that fit this setup are 18" X 11" ET5 rear and 9" ET 48 up front.
Usually a modified car like this that isn't a clone for a specific factory made model usually detract from the price but the market is all over the place so it is up to you if the price is right and if you like the looks or not.
This might not be an easy car to flip. It has a narrow market to begin with and you see how you are reacting no doubt no matter how much you fix it up it might still get the same responses and turning it back to a narrow body would be far to pricey to make it worthwhile.
If you decide to buy it and return it to stock and if the parts are factory I would be interested in buying the parts (minus the tail) from you. I have factory narrow body rear flairs I can trade you .
BTW can I buy the garage. Looks like the owner is a collector.
