A fellow addict just purshased a 93 c2, and it came with an air intake that eliminates the barn door air flow meter all together, it has a large KN on it then what looks like a machined aluminum block with electrical wires to it, and then a connection to the throtle body. Has anyone heard of anything like this and what type of performance is expected. where do you source one.thanks .

Sounds from your description like a Mass airflow sensor assembly. However it might be an idea to at least post an image.
I do not mind having a guess but without an image this could actually be anything and then the guess sends your friend off on the wrong way. He believes he has something he hasn't.

Ok here are some pics.
Adrian, car manufactured in 6-93, wide body cab(sold as a 94 according to original car delivery papers,
has 2 fact oil coolers, small fog with brake cooling intakes,full BB exhaust,tower brace,8.5-10 ruf speedline wheels,18.5 K documented miles,
anyway nice car, I was familiar with all the add ons except the air intake.

If so, it's a 'MAF' that uses a hot wire or hot film to meter intake air mass rather than the oem 'barn door'. They are expensive hp. i.e. a few hp for a lot of $$. They are said to provide better throttle response as well but that's hard to evaluate.

That looks like the 'Autothority' version of a MAF kit. It comes w/ a custom chip for the DME

I suspected that it was a hot wire since the air flow meter is gone and that is the only thing there. The receipts that came with the car show it installed in 96.....cost of the part 1600....it was installed at a Porsche dealership for the first owner.....I have seen some claims that along with a larger throttle body they can be good for up to 50 horse. I think I saw that in the Performance catalogue.

yup, I agree....with the the exhaust change to the BB, you can estimate a gain of 25-30, and the mass flow and chip 7-10 , this makes it a 280-290 964, should be lots of fun.....

Yes, as I just posted on the "chip" thread, I added a Autothority Mass Flow and Chip a few months ago and could not believe the immidiate difference. I was laughing out loud on the way home from my P dealership (where I had it installed after hours by a P mechanic who has one in his 964). I would imagine anyone saying the improvement is "in your head" on these, has never driven a car with Autothority set up. I am not sure how much of the increase is due to the chip or the mass flow, but I would assume the mass flow (looks exactly like the one pictured above). The throttle response is greatly improved and power/tourque. I know it is not in my head or just a placebo effect because all my friends I gave rides to were very impressed. Acceleration is better in all gears, but 4th at 120 mph I can let off the throttle and then mash it and it will through your head back. That was not possible before. On the track, power oversteer is now easily available.

The best upgrade I have made since I upgraded my inner cooler on my 3rd gen rx-7, although my suspension is coming up next.

Forklift, did you enlarge the throttle body too? it is the next and biggest restriction now, we will try and modify it on this car and see....I took this car out finally yesterday and it is noticeably faster that my RS america, and yes I know what you are saying about the throttle response, it is immidiate , lots of fun.

The throttle body was not touched, as far as I kmow, by my mechanic. My next upgrade will be the suspension (RS Euro), then a lightweight flywheel when the clutch goes.....I think I will stop there.

The flywheel is great, quicker acceleration, engine revs faster and faster response, you have to take it easy on the clutch , it feels like it engages faster ie. you might kill the engine the first couple of times. nice upgrade.
As far as the euro susp. makes the car handle well, ride stiffness is noticeable but not real bad. Great if you like to "drive", but not if you commute in a place like pot-hole city. ENJOY

Great thanks, I am looking forward to both. I live near DC so it is for weekends and the track. Getting it detailed tomorrow and then probably won't be driven until my next DE in March....probably.
