Question dash lights that activate on "ignition on" - is this all of them?

I know someone mentioned this before, that they wanted to be sure all of the lights that are supposed to come on, do.... so I thought I'd post some pics to be sure all of my lights are working!

You all likely think I am a dodo for posting this, but the main reason was the few lights I can see on my oil gauge that are not lit up - specifically there is a green light that resembles the red 4wd system light, that does not light up. Just curious if someone's lights up differently. Sounds like they are all there!

I think you're missing one. There should be an airbag light on between the 2 and 3 digits on the clock. This light may go off after a few seconds once the ignition is turned on (I don't remember) but if you don't see it on at all, then there may be a problem.

Hope this helps,

Bill Wagner

Good eye! Yes, it must have gone off by the time the camera took the shot, as I do see it when I start up! Thanks Bill.

Many thanks for posting these-I've been looking for good pictures of all the warning lights for several days.

Hi,
My CHECK ENGINE light does not come on as the one in the picture does. The large exclamation point light comes on and then goes off when I start the car however. Everything seems to work fine.

If this condition is just a burned out lamp, how does one go about changing it?? If it isn't, what would I look for?? and how much trouble may I be in for??
Any help would be appreciated.

The gauges are held in by a rubber gasket-thingy - you just pull the gauge out of the dash, it will slide out; you may have to wiggle around a bit, but they'll come out and then on the back you can unscrew the small colored covers to reveal the bulbs.

Check your bulbs first! On my thread about cleaning the inside lens of the gauge there are some good pics of what the gauge looks like - I think...

Depending on what year the check engine light was not used, mine was a 1990 and did not have it. I took a peek behind and found a plug installed in the back of the gauge. I installed a bulb and it worked. I suggest you do a search on "check engine light", Adrian has some very useful info regarding using it for diagnostic purposes.

Hi again,
We'll I took the gauge out. My car is a '90 and I found that mine does not have the "CHECK ENGINE" light activated either. A blank(white) plug is in that spot. I swapped it for a green one with bulb and found the "CHECK ENGINE" light works as one would expect .

However, I checked in my manual and there is no mention of a "CHECK ENGINE" light. Now I am wondering if there is no useful reason to have this light available.

Does anyone know if I should enable this function or, maybe I should leave well enough alone and forget the check engine function?

I wish I could be of more help to others instead of asking all the questions, however, I am a relatively new 964 owner.

botoo:

Check out my web site (link is underneath my signature below). It has instructions on how to use the check engine light system. However, don't be too terribly surprised if it doesn't work at all. I think in '90, only those cars with California emissions (it might have been an option on others too) requirements had to have the functioning check engine light. Who knows, maybe Porsche threw one in there or someone has updated the ECU on you. It's worth a shot because it's only about 3 minutes worth of work...just don't be alarmed if it doesn't work or it's functioning oddly.

CHEERS!!!

Hi Bill,
I tried to get the fault codes, however my CHECK ENGINE light just stays lit, no blinking or anything else. I assume this function is not on my '90. I am going to put the lamp back where it belongs and forget this function.

Thanks everyone for the help.
