Hello,
I read somewhere that head gaskets were introduced in 1991 and above 964s. Is this correct?

Yes, the head gaskets were introduced during the 1991 production run. My car was manufactured in January of 1991 and it's serial number was several thousand past the number where they first started installing them. As a guess, I would say the first third of the year was gasketless, and the final two thirds of the year were gasketted. I have no production numbers vs. engine serial numbers to back this speculation up.

Engine serial numbers where the changeover from non-gasketted to gasketted heads
occured in 1991 as follows:

Manual Transmission: any number beyond 62 M 06836, M64.01
Tiptronic Transmisson: any number beyond 62 M 52757, M64.02

This change most likely took place in the fall of 1990 (unconfirmed by me). Here's a cut-n-paste I have from some 964 data I have based on info from Bruce Anderson's book:
