Default Gapping oil scraper intermediate ring

My set of piston rings came with the 3-piece oil scraper, so there's 2 thin rings (I gapped to 25 thou) and a "spring" scraper sandwiched between them. My question concerns the correct way to gap this, if I need to at all...it seems it would compress into itself as it heats up. I have a normal ring grinder and don't want to mess this up.

No need to gap the spring. Just the two thin rings. The spring should shorten on its own. Be careful when installing the pistons into the block. I would invest in a better spring compressor than the cheap ones from auto parts stores or sears. A tapered one to fit 100.0mm would be ideal, or you can get an adjustable tapered one that will still work. I shattered an oil scraper ring in the bore with the cheap ring compressor and it gouged my cylinder.

Thanks! I actually bought a nice 100mm tapered ring compressor for this job already.
