Default Short Shift Kit for '86 951

My 951 shifter is VERY sloppy and I suspect the normal wear at the linkage piece on the transaxle.

Is it worth going to a short shift kit? I know some folks say the 911 kits are not necessarily a good thing (especially the non-factory ones...).

So - factory replacement or short shift? What's the opinion of the board?

your problem is probably at the shifter pull up the boot and check it

Well I would lean toward factory, I had a short shift from Kokeln and it rattled like a hobo on the street with a can of change.. Unless you can be assured that there is no rattle from guys like Speed force, stay with the factory one.

I agree. When you start adding different shifters to our cars they are very prone to make noise. You can battle it with patience and the right type of epoxy and foam etc. Its a major pain however. I have a momo shifter on mine and made my own end for the stock rectangular end. Plus I cut over an inch off the rod to make it shorter. It works but took me over a week to get the rattles all out. After all is said and done I would have been better off just spending the cash for a proven kit!

Is the 944Racing kit a 'proven' kit. It is said to reduce shift movement by 50% and make more precise shifting. It works from the trnasaxle

Thanks for any opinion

AUTOTHORITY QSK REPLACES the nylon bushings at the trans with a heim joint, it has two settings, short and very short. Both the fore aft movement and the side to side are independantly adjustable. If your shifter is really sloppy the problem is most likely the pin where the shift lever is connected to the rod that goes to the trans.
Pull up the boots and ckeck the rod coming off the side of the gold coloured shift lever, it should be cylindrical. They usually wear untill they are barrel shaped.

I personally found the APE shift kit to be a total PITA the entire time I had it, from the woefully inadequate directions to the fact that the damn thing just would NOT stay bolted in. It DID shorten the shift but changing the bolt on that SOB on the side of the highway offramp in the June in Texas, was enough for me.

Went back to stock and chucked the other one into the lake. It wouldnt have been right to sell it to someone else. Disclaimer, the APE shifter has been used by LOADS of people without problem, but I am not the only one to have the same experience. I am not affliated with anyone and am not trying to sell something else, just listing the experience I had.

I have the same question. Had anyone tried it? I will have my tranny out and am thinking about the 944racing short shift kit.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I had a sloppy shifter also. My mechanic said that the pin was bent and had to be replaced. Made a world of a difference. Reno

I have the 944Racing kit, but have not installed it yet as I've been away.

The 944racing kit is the Autothority kit. If it isnt it is a damn close knock off with the exact same design.

The autothority kit is adjustable and better designed than the 944racing kit...

I have the autothority and love it, no rattles...and fully adjustable.

Install is a PITA, but if you know the trans linkage...its much easier.
