Default Fluctuating Temp Gauge

I just had my water pump replaced and now my temp gauge fluctuates when I come to a stop. It doesn't over heat, but I swear I don't remember the movement in the gauge before. Normal position is about 1/4 on the gauge, but it now ranges between 1/4 and just under 3/4 (7/8 is red). Is this normal, or should I look into the problem. I may try to bleed the system tomorrow???

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

Try a good bleed. Get the front of the car in the air if you can when you bleed it, turn the heater on full blast. I've also seen this happen during pump changes and it was someone touched/moved/disturbed the temp sender wire which can be brittle or corroded. If this doesn't work try a good cry.

If the temp rises slowly and only when you haven't been moving for a while like when you're stuck in a traffic jam, it's normal. If however it jumps up as soon as you come to a stop, there's definately something weird going on... like Jeremy suggested, try bleeding first.

Thanks... I'll try the bleed. I already cried at the repair price tag. :-)

I take it you didn't replace the water pump yourself. As I understand it almost all the rebuilt pumps now are Turbo pumps and rebuilders press in a sealing disk in the turbo outlet for the NAs. So if the shop didn't pull this sealing disk out for your turbo that could be one problem.

Another thing could be they screwed up the electrical connector on your temperature sending unit.

But my money would be on air in the system since that is so easy not to bleed correctly.

Out of curiosity, when you come to an idle and the temp guage starts up toward the top mark, will it almost immediately come back down if you rev the motor up to at least around 2000rpm? If that is the case most likely it is a bleeding problem.

It does come down immediatly when I rev the engine. Are there any tricks to properly/easily bleed the system?

I've posted this before, but here it is again... by far the best thing going. It's easy to setup and use, and works the first time... well worth the money, much better than the Stant or similar pressure bleeders (I've used them both).
