Voltage regulator swap question
Can the stock alternator be unbolted where it sits and its belt removed, then the alternator rotated 90 degrees to gain access to the voltage regulator?
Some prior posts say the whole alternator must be removed from the car to change the VR, given a very tight fit. But, at least one old post said he swapped the VR in situ by use of a stubby screwdriver.
So, what works best to change voltage regulators?

I have not had to change the voltage reg on my 951 yet. On the 2 944 NA cars that I have owned I just removed the rear cover from the alt, using a very short stubby screwdriver removed the 2 screws holding the regulator in place and wiggled the old regulator out and inserted the new onw into place. 30 min tops. Never touched the mounting bolts at all.

I don't remember exactly but I believe I used 1/4" drive ratchet with an 8mm socket or 8mm box wrench to remove the shroud. Then I used a ratcheting screw driver bit wrench to remove the regulator.

You might have better access to it from underneath but that alternator is really wedged in there. I just did mine but had the intake manifold off for other service. Also, the screws holding the VR in were extremely tight on mine, requiring a large effort and putting most of my weight on the screwdriver to break them loose but your's may not have this problem of course. The biggest pain was getting the shroud loose as the wire is still connected and doesn't allow much movement. Good luck.
