Default a good spot for oil temp sensor...

i would really like to put in an oil temp. gauge. i was looking at the underside, and i was going to tee at the oil presure sending unit location. the problem is, this is pretty inacurate as the oil still has to go to the filter and cooler before it hits the bearings. i do not want to take off the cooler/filter mounting thing and tap that (daily driver), and i cant think of any good spot. any ideas?

take care,
brian

Generally speaking, you want worst case scenario #'s. Place sensor at the point where the oil leaves the motor. If it's a street car, temp's are far less important than pressure. A good synthetic (proper weight, too) lubricates better @ 220 than 180. Get scared @ 270.

I think the best would be to tap the oil line return from the turbo, that would be the worst case for sure, it just could be a challenge to do that. Maybe get a spare and try it out.

You want to take your temps in the sump.

It's the temp of the oil right before it is sucked into the engine that counts. That's the oil that the engine is using at that moment in time.

What you want to do is either to tap the pan down low, or cnc a custom drain bolt.

In the case of an electronic sender (not the preferred choice because of the low gauge resolution), you can tap the factory drain bolt).

In the case of a manual gauge/sender (the preferred choice) you either have to tap the oil pan or you have to cnc a custom drain pan bolt that will allow you to thread in the bulb sender.

VDO makes a vision gauge for standard 2-1/16 hole. Part number is #310-106 at around $28.00. They also have the drain bolt sender, 19mm part# 323-055 for about $11.00. Fine for street use.

For racing, take TonyGs advise and go for better gauge resolution where temps are critical.

Mobil 1 doesn't hurt either ;o)

so - greg...maybe this is a dumb question: does the 323-055 part REPLACE the drain bolt completely? i have external air temp gauge in the 3rd hole of the gauge panel (along with EGT and Boost) that i'd like to replace with a oil temp gauge. if this sender just replaces the drain bolt, that'd be the easy way to go for me....
thanks.
