Default Damaged pistons

I am reaching out to the engine gurus for an expert opinion. Are pistons with such damage salvageable?

No. They're far gone. There's no skirt shape and size left to support the piston in the bore.

Yes they are usable, I sent a bunch of them for the 944 fest last year and Dan made some great trophies with them.

They are usable as material to cast new pistons.

Wow. I was just in Frederick last night. What do you think happened to those pistons?

They are custom, possibly JE, pistons for a 3.0L project that lasted 20 minutes on a dyno after a fresh build. Low oil level put and end to it

3 out of 4 pistons have similar damage. Luckily the knife edged crank and Pauter rods were not damaged.

Default Damaged pistons

Pics of all 4 matched pistons from that engine and 2 additional JE pistons from another project. If someone thinks they might have a use of them send me a PM or email. I know that they can be used for measurements in order to be replicated.

Local shop in VA many years ago. They were very good/famous in the area in the early to mid '90s building 944 family race cars. The tech made the mistake not to prime the aftermarket oil cooler and when the thermostat opened the oil level dropped enough to cause such a failure. I got the parts from the former owner of the shop and owner of the failed project.

How big of an oil cooler did you have? I will have to keep that in mind when starting mine for the first time.

I've seen similar damage from water in the cylinder(s) too. H20 sucks as a lubricant.
