If I had my 951 when I was 16, I would not be on this board today.

LEARN HOW TO DRIVE IT.

In the first few months I almost wrecked it several times and that is with about 10 years under my belt of driving. If I had it at 16 it would have been wrapped around a tree or worse, a family. And that was pretty much in stock trim. The 944 Turbo is a de tuned street legal race car. With standard mods it IS a street legal race car.

I agree with the drivers education course first. Out of the box these car are very fast. I want to warn you about turning up the boost without addressing the fuel. The very first modification that I would do would be to get a good set of gauges to monitor everything. First would be an air/fuel, second boost, and finally EGT. Please be careful. If you wreck insurance companies rather take these cars then to fix them, Good Luck ed

You want to keep up with a '94 RX-7? You could do that now with the 951, and after he does a bunch of crazy mods to it, you can keep up with him on your bike. He could mod himself out of a somewhat reliable engine into a grenade waiting to go off. Mod all you want, it will make straight lines faster, but DE is the way to go. I came in 38th place in the novice class at the last autox because I'm not a capable driver with this car yet. I've taken everyone's advice and I am going to DE at the end of the month and a couple more next year to go along with the autox's. THEN, I will install the go-fast parts. In the meantime, I am saving money for said parts.

belts, rollers, seals/gaskets, water pump, alternator, CV's, oil, coolant, gas, weather stripping, tires, sensors, relays, etc...

With the age of these cars, any number of things may come up in a year. $2,000 is an average of things that may go bad or just be due for replacing.

Agreed, in fact depending how you drive it that figure may be a bit conservative

Just having the clutch replaced can bring you around $2k.

With all this "learn to drive" talk, I think I need to remind that even though a 951 is definately a fast car that has the potential to get you in trouble, it's not going to bite you unless you ask for it... so don't get all stressed up before you try it (DE is definately recommended, I've been out on a track pretty often this year and it's been great fun - there's just no way I could drive my car like that on the streets)

Like was said before, the chips you have there now might be pretty decent. Guru chips are relatively cheap though, and there's a bunch of dyno charts proving they are better than the alternatives. All my friends who have them are pretty impressed... I'm installing mine hopefully during the weekend, will post results when/if it's done.

Another thing you should consider is suspension upgrades. A simple 250# spring set and maybe 968 M030 sway bars front and rear will make a huge difference in how the car feels in curves. And it's not that expensive either! Going to a full coilover set is more $$$, and in my personal opinion it would be overkill at this stage.... but if some day you feel like you want more, there are plenty of options to choose from

The clutch, water pump, hoses, timing belt, and cv joints are going to be replaced before I drive it. It's my dad's car, but I will end up doing some work on it. It has been sitting in our garage the last 2 years "being worked on".

I think DE would be fun. I just want to ride with someone first. These cars are so awesome it just brings a smile to my face thinking about them.

definitely do some de's get some seat time with a pro first as was posted before if i had my 951 when i was younger i wouldn't be here either. I'm 32 now bought my first one when I was 24 still learning to drive this thing car is definitely more capable than I am. Learn to RESPECT anything you drive and definitely a modded 951 these cars are missles.
