My 86 944 Turbo has started making what sounds like a lifter noise when first started cold. The sound seems to be from a single lifter and is quite noticeable. When I lift the hood and listen carefully while the engine idles, the sound seems to be coming from the valve train. The noise eventually goes away when the engine gets hot .
Questions:
1) Is there a potential for damage to my engive if my lazy butt continues to drive the car before I get around to fixing the problem?
2) Does my diagnoisis of a lifter noise seem correct?
3) If it is a stuck lifter, what would it take to fix it?
Thanks in advance for all help and assistance.

Get yourself a stethoscope. then you can tell where exactly it's coming from.
If it's from the area of the belts, get it sorted now! Could be a pulley gone, or even the water pump.
If it's a lifter, then make sure you have a good oil level, but you can drive carefully until you have the time to change it. Make sure that time is soon though.

I've been wondering about the clicking noises coming from under the hood of my car too. Does anyone have a good sound clip of a healthy engine?
If it's the injectors, then we should always here a clicking noise while the motor is on, right?
What do bad rod bearings sound like?
With 145k miles on her, I tend to worry a little...
