I'm a bit confused with this 951 Escort Cup designation...
What does it refer to ?
I know that there was (for Canada) :
1986 : Rothmans 944 NA cars (engaged in the Rothmans Trophy)
1987 : Rothmans 944 NA cars (engaged in the Rothmans Trophy)
1988 to 1990 : Rothmans 944 Turbo Cup cars (engaged in the Rothmans Turbo Cup Trophy)
But what about this 951 Escort Cup car and the "Escort series" ?
I've heard about 11 951 Cup escort cars produced but i'm really not sure about that. I've also heard that 951 Cup Escort cars = 951 ClubSport ???
If someone can explain me what were (or still is ?) the escort series, and what are these 951 Cup escort cars ?
Lindsey racing sells bilstein coilovers for these cars, clutch, etc...
The Escort Cars were made for the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America)Playboy-Escort Race series for the USA. Playboy Magazine and Escort radar detectors were the series sponsors, hense the name.
The Escort Series was an all makes endurance championship on various tracks across the US. I think the races were anywhere from 3 hour sprints to 12 hour enduros.
I know they (Porsche Motorsport North America through private teams and dealerships) ran 86 944 Turbo Club Sports in the series for 86 and then made the "Escort" specific cars for 87. I dont think there are any 88s or later cars, but could be wrong. I believe this is where Jon Milledge started working on 944 Turbos.
They are basically US spec Turbo Cup Cars. Meaning: cup performance specs but with the US style bumpers and front/rear side parking lights. They came with Matter cages (installed after importation I think), 8 and 9x16 magnesium phone dials, etc. However, they used koni (possibly another series sponsor?) suspension, not bilstein. But as far as I know the spring rates are the same or at least similar front and rear (coil overs with the 25.5mm Torsion Bars).
The rumor I heard is that the cars came with 3 sets of chips for qual/sprints and endurance use. 250, 275, and 300 bhp.

This above is correct they made 11 Escort Turbo Cup cars in 1987 for North America. Driver change 24 hours at Mosport 1987
Nine came to USA and two went to Canada. I have one of the Canadian cars #07 of the 11 cars for 1987
That is great I wonder if some day we can get all 11 of the NA models together in one spot. I suspect all 11 are in the USA now.
well i know travis had a few come to 944 fest at nelson ledges last year. Im a huge fan of the cup cars but not practical for me because i would never race such a piece of history… bad enough i took an original silver-rose and turned it into a cup car to race it in pca… but seeing the originals was totally cool especially rick byes old car…
I've seen 3 together at one event, but that was back in the early 90's. Two were commonly seen at Road America Club Races in the late 90's and early 00's.
Are both of the Canadian Escorts in the US now? Paul Allen tracked down all of the 9 US cars some years ago in a rennlist thread, but I believe at least 3 have changed hands since then.
Thom - whatever happened to Asarus (Seb?), he disappeared from Rennlist quite a few years ago.
Mike, those are the older 17" E26 cast magnesium centers. Haven't been available new in years, and hard to find used. Need to be careful with them, should only be used for show or street use. The spokes will crack with extended track use. Current replacement for the E26 is the E87 machined alum center. The E88s are the current aluminum 18" centers, and are closer to $4500-5000 for a full set new from BBS.
1970six - I'll shoot you a PM so we can exchange contact info and complain about how all the unique cup/motorsport parts are impossible to find spares for...
