Default oil cooler for torsen diff?

hi all,

i know the Turbo S etc came with the oil cooler for the transmission. i have heard/read that this was because they use the clutch-type LSD which can get quite hot. if this is true, does it mean that the oil cooler is not necessary for a torsen diff (eg GT or quaife)? or is it a good idea to install one anyway?

pls excuse if this is a stupid question, me = n00b.

All 86 951's had the transmission cooler reguardless of differential. Later models had the cooler as an option. So, if the car has one it does not mean that it has LSD. I don't feel that adding a cooler to a car with a Quaife is necessary.

hmm...i've been searching around, and i've read that 'worm-gear' based diffs (like the quaife) can generate a lot of heat (seemed to be implied that they generated even more than a clutch-type lsd). any thoughts?

If you're worried about it, put a cooler on it - extra cooling is only a good thing.

I'm putting a gauge on mine (non-LSD with factory cooling loops) in a couple of months - I've not heard any info on how necessary the cooling is needed, so I'm finding out for myself. I don't know how effective that factory loop is, though it'd be real easy to just put a new cooler in series with the factory loop. Regardless of factory or aftermarket, you'll need the internal pump gear for the cooling loop to push fluid around.
