Given the '89 turbo is simply the recast '88 951S (for all intents and purposes), what do you think is more collectible...The 88 951S or the 89 turbo?
I've been lurking on these 951S cars for years and hoping to finally pull the trigger as soon as one comes along that fits the bill.

Hands down -88 S silverrose. The -89 even if it has the correct options, will never be an S.
But if you can stretch get a Turbo Cup! My guess is they will be very expensive in the future. Alot more than the 80-100000 euro they are now.

'88 Turbo S. The 89 has most of its goodies, but not all. Notably, the '88 Turbo S had headlight washers, a split rear seat, and a couple of other small features that the '89 Turbo did not. And of course the Silver Rose color scheme was unique to the 1988 model year.
And technically speaking, an '88 is the only real Turbo S, so there's that.

Rising tide will lift all ships. The 88S (silver + plaid), 88S (the rest), 89, and 86 with Fuchs seem to doing well, with premium on any that are stock or easily returned to such.

Stock 951 low miles from 86-89 are selling well, there was a 88t that sold in excess of 80k at a estate auction

I had the opportunity to buy an 88 turbo S silver/plaid a few years back and I bought a Rover instead. Funny. I may have a buyer for that same Rover this weekend and have a few leads on a 951. No S or '89 but may have to lower my expectations to keep it affordable and have some $$$ left over for any pressing issues. So many I've found have broken speedos...what gives???

That's the extra weight there caring around. 300lbs or more. My 87 has all the performance goodies attached from the 88 TS and it seems to be really fast and handles well. But the fastest 951 is hands down a cup car from the factory due to light weight and power(in numbers produced). The fastest family related 944 is one of the four factory built 968 turbo RS race cars. I think those are also one of the most expensive of the whole 924,944,968 family lineup. We are talking factory not what we have done to them. 600 hp is not factory. DOHC 3.0l turbo is not factory(but should have been). DOHC 2.5l turbo, however is a factory setup (lemans 81), which would be the runner up for the second fastest (if not really the fastest) factory 951 car. And maybe cost more then the 968 turbo RS cars, because there are only a couple left, (like two!)

Stock, they sure as hell are. If you're talking about stripped out, hot rodded track cars, they're not high dollar collector material (or even what this thread is about). Lart, you're my kind of guy, but that comment is threadjacking at its finest.

The answer is simple too, 88 and 89 are more valuable leaving them unmolested 86 and 87 are less expensive making them ideal for track or hardcore mods

FYI, my 89 and every one I've seen has the split rear seats. Maybe it was a mandatory option on the 89.
