Does anybody know the exact change in length of the shorter 968 axle shaft? I am having a set of custom 4340 shafts made, but Rob is not sure of the size difference. I have made many searches, and no dimensions are posted, just the fact it is shorter.
Both shafts are different. One is shorter, the other one longer.
I thought you were French not Irish!
I might have some out of the car in the shop Eric. I'll ask. There should be enough people around that will know. Maybe drop over to http://www.968forums.com/
The ones I have appear to be about 26.5 inches and 25 inches. Again, can't say for sure that they are 968 halfshafts, but that is what the were alleged to be when I bought them.
Are you sure about the right side being longer? There are at least ten threads on this and all say only the left side is shorter.
Is the difference so little that the stock 951 shaft can be used on the right side?
I helped a friend put a 951 transmission into his 968 while he has his 6-speed rebuilt, and I brought 1 951 axle with me (to replace the shorter left one), then we found out the right one was too long and I had to go find another 951 shaft for him.
It looked like the left (shorter) one could have worked anyway, but the longer one wouldn't work. So if someone were doing the opposite swap, I'd say the 951 axle could be used on the right instead of the long one, but you'd need the short one for the left, but this is just a theory.
Thanks for the pictures, but I really need just the measurements for the bare two axles as pictured above by Thom. Since I am having custom ones machined from larger 4340 cores. They are expensive and I only want to do it once. I really don't want to have to buy a set just to take apart and measure. Hopefully, Thom can measure for me.
