I believe they are both 2.5L cars...just an S2 shell with a 951 engine

Correct they are both 2.5L. I put a used engine in the 87, then later i went through the 87 motor and put in the 89S2 body. Unless you do all the work yourself you could not get what the 89S2 is for this price you would need to add at least 5k for labor minimum.
