generally the end caps break, there is a spring inside if I recall. Consider yourself lucky it has lasted this long!

Think there's a fix on Clark's Garage somewhere on how to disassemble one end of the cargo/trunk cover and replace the spring.

Just went through this. Ian has newer caps that you may need to slightly drill and epoxy on the spring side. As you get it apart I found the spring retainer slipped off the rod. Epoxy helped hold it together and the caps fit fine. Was easy to fix with the dremel.
