I had a 968 a while back ... hence the name.
Sold it to buy a Boxster...... didn't fit in that or think it was fast so sold it and bought the 2 cars I have always wanted!!!!!

A 951 and a Euro 911 turbo WideBody

Much better than the Boxster but I do miss my 968.

Thanks for the times and info by the way

Paul

170 in 5th??

Are those times for a stock 951??? If so then 100+ in 3rd with a 951 that has standard upgrades should be able to hit 100 in 3rd no problem.

These are the numbers with tire rack's revolutions per mile of 843 for my 245/45-16 Yokohama AVS Sports at 6500 rpm.

1st 39.2
2nd 66.6
3rd 97.9
4th 132.6
5th 165.4

At 7000 rpm:
1st 42.2
2nd 71.7
3rd 105.4
4th 142.8
5th 178.1

However, my car gets kind of lame above ~6200 rpm. Of course, the airflow over the intercooler gets pretty significant at 5th gear/6200 rpm.

Yes, the rpm vs. mph chart for each gear is in the owner's manual. You can calculate it yourself. Just take the gear and axle ratios to relate engine rpm to wheel rpm. Then calculate wheel rollout distance from the wheel diameter. Multiply the rollout distance by wheel rpms x 60 and that gives you vehicle speed. That's exactly what the chart in the owner's manual has done.

If you use 6400 (not 6500) rpm as redline, then you get the following speeds at redline (for 24.7 inch wheel diameter for size 245/45/16):

1st gear 39.8 mph
2nd gear 67.6 mph
3rd gear 99.5 mph
4th gear 134.7 mph
5th gear 168.0 mph

If your wheel diameter is different than 24.7 inches, take the ratio of your diameter to 24.7 inches and multiply the above results by that ratio.

Here is a spreadsheet I made for looking at 944 gearing:

http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/944gearing.xls

It might not make much sense, but if you search around Rennlist, you can probably find my description of how it works.

I just put a set of Danno's chips on and a test pipe......other wise the car is stock.

As we all know 3rd is always a good gear in any 944/951 but to my surprise 4th actually seems a lot faster.
3rd is s**t hot but WOW 4th!!!!

I dont know if I am just experiencing the speed as its a taller gear or if its maybe a boost thing???

Anyone know???

Thanks,
Paul

Paul, yes 4th gets about 1psi more max-boost than 3rd due to the mechanical boost-control. But I think you're experiencing the longer acceleartion period available in 4th vs. the quick shift needed in 3rd? You may also notice with the more responsive partial-throttle/mid-range that you don't have to downshift to pass anymore?

For gearing numbers and speeds, I've got a Gear Ratios Chart on my 951 RacerX website. It has all the gearing from the 924 up to the 968. To figure top-speeds in each gear, just take the MPH/1k-RPM number and multiply by 6.5 for stock redline, 7.0 for APE chips or any other RPMs you want.

Is it jsut me or 4th and 5th seem very close in gearing, at least in real world driving. On the highway at 55-65 mph in 4th is about 3,300-3,500rpm, and 5th it is about 2,900-3,200. I.e. about 500-750 rpm drop from 4th to 5th. I would expect 5th to be a little taller. On long drives in 5th at about 65-70mph, the revs are sitting above 3K and sometimes I actually like a little more "touring" feel. But only sometimes At least in 5th gear.

It is just (jsut?) you Todd.

rpm ______4th ______5th

55 mph __2,650 ____2,100
65 mph __3,150 ____2,500

Yes, 4th and 5th gears are only about 500-600 rpm apart, but that is significant. I can't use 5th below 65 mph, and I typically stay in 4th till about 70 mph. My speedo reads about 1% high with my 255/45x17 Kuhmos; yours may read higher due to smaller tire size. There is no way my revs are above 3,000 rpm in 5th until close to 80 mph.

Todd - someone put a late NA trans in your car because a 951 box does about 79.5 MPH at 3000 RPM in 5th gear.

i had custom autothority chips made for my turbo and the rev limiter was 6800 rpm, i did numerous runs from standstill to 120 mph over the years and every time in 3rd gear i remember that at 105-106 mph i had to shift into 4th, i ran 245-50-16 in rear and 225-50-16 in front on phone dial wheels (1 size wider tires than it came with stock in 1986), and i had the speedo sensor in the back transaxel
