That's the doctrine authored by PCNA...If I was tracking my car I would go back to the 16" phone dials but I'm not so the 18" will be fine...I upgraded the castor blocks as a precaution and inspect them every couple of weeks.

"So danno what offset do you recommend with that combo? What about running 10.5 all around ? What tires do you reccomend witht the above recomendations?"
My 17x10.5/11.5" wheels have 35mm front and 25mm rear offset on my '86 951.
The 10.5" 35mm-offset wheel will work all around. If you want to do that, I would recommend 17x10" 35mm offset all around with 255/40-17 tires (65m offset on '87+ cars). I got the biggest wheels possible because I'll be running 275/315mm tires once I get wider fenders. At which point, I may upgrade the outer halves to end up at 17x11" and 17x12.5"

FWIW, the "suspension bolts loosening" is common to our cars with any wheel/tire combo installed if you track your car. That's why God made Lock-tite and I made plates to replace the eccentrics.
I have used 16,17 and most recently 18" wheels on my car and they all worked just fine. You have to remember Porsche is going to discourage what they don't know. 18's were not very common when our cars were in production so they probably never tested them and therefore will not give them their blessing for liability reasons.

Here is what Porsche has to say on the subject in their technical bulletin 49305 which applies to all 944 models:
Subject: Installation of 18" Wheels Not Approved
April 15, 1993
Concern:
Retrofitting 18" wheels on Porsche vehicles which do not have 18" wheels as original equipment is NOT ALLOWED.
General Information:
Endurance tests have shown that equipping certain Porsche vehicles with 18" wheels in an application not already approved by Porsche Cars, N.A. may result in loosened bolts and/or threaded connections on the front wheel carriers. This, in turn, may cause fractures in these components. Fractures may also occur in the front strut mounts and in the body in the area of the rear suspension as a result of the installation of 18" wheels not already approved for installation for this specific application.
Such damage can occur without warning and the vehicle may become very hard to control or steer as a result of this improper installation.
Porsche dealer personnel coming in contact with a vehicle that has been retrofitted with 18" wheels in an application not approved by Porsche, should inform the owner of the vehicle of the potential for damage to their vehicle and loss of steering control. Porsche Cars, N.A. should also be notified of any vehicles retrofitted with 18" wheels.
