Default crankshaft end play

hi,

i've been a bit concerned about the crankshaft end play as i have been running a KEP 2 for about 10 years. i got the shop to measure it and this was the result:
MEASURE CRANKSHAFT END FLOAT TO 3 DEC PLACES.

REMOVED LOWER ENGINE COVER.

FITTED DIAL INDICATOR TO FRONT SUBFRAME - LOCATED
DIAL INDICATOR ONTO LOWER FRONT ENGINE PULLEY.

MEASURED CRANKSHAFT END FLOAT TO BE 0.050mm.

CRANKSHAFT END FLOAT WELL WITHIN SPECIFIED TOLERANCE.
On the face of it this seems like a good result, my only concern is that the measurement is too low...afaik the workshop manual specifies the tolerance for a new part to be 0.110 to 0.312mm. so have they measured it correctly?

To measure it you need to be able to push the crank forward AND backwards. If they are pushing the pedal down only, there is nothing pushing it forward (no springs etc). I did it with the engine out of the car but it should be doable with the engine in the car, you just need to manually push the flywheel/etc foward (towards the radiator, use a breaker bar to get lots of leverage), measure, depress pedal and then measure the difference.

The KEP isnt the big deal, its holding the clutch pedal down. Do you hold it down for long periods of time, ie sitting at red lights in gear with pedal down? My original crank was nuked with just the stock pressure plate, I suspect the POs sat keeping the clutch pedal down. I think my axial play was 1.2mm forward to back.

exactly, you need to thrust the crank all the way in both directions, easiest when oil pan is removed.. Then if you are well out of spec, your thrust bearing on the man journal is most likely the culprit
