I hope this car does not go down the path of the chassis swap project of 2003, but who knows I get a lot of crazy ideas in my head. I just did a quick search and it looks like all the pictures of that old chassis swap are long gone from rennlist, it would be interesting to see documentation of that whole ordeal.
Dino,
First things first (other than finishing the e30 project), and I need to address a few issues from the previous owner, a couple oil leaks, a vacuum system in need of a refresh, and a fuel rail that looses pressure as soon as the car is turned off. At least this isn't my first 951 rodeo and I should be able to jump in and solve most of the issue without too much expense or trouble (I hope)
Cruise,
What made you go with the ground control setup? I know lots of BMW folks use them for coilovers, but they don't seem to be as as common in the 944/51/68 world.
I settled on the GC's after I drove Clifton's car and liked the way it felt. The total package price was very good too. I plan to add some delrin washers to cut down on the spring noise in the front. I do wish that the struts allowed for some adjustment to 0 camber, so you could adjust the camber by the marks on the camber plates after getting it zeroed. Ride height adjustments are a piece of cake now. I am glad the t-bars are gone.
Good to hear some positives on the GC coilover setup- like ian said Ive never heard much about them in the 944/951 land but plenty of BMW folks use/like them.
The package price is great considering it comes with a custom front shock, camber plates, rear mounting bolts, etc. I talked to them on the phone last week about setting up my car for the street with no t-bars. Will be ordering soon to replace the escorts that came out.
So I was giving the car a once over, and found there was a slight problem with the axle bolts. I am amazed I made it back to Charlotte (not to mention the miles I have been putting on the car around town). These 6 were from just one coupling, so only two bolts were holding it in place. 24 new bolts on order.
A quick order of new hardware from McMaster-Carr and the axles are securely back in place. It turns out 8 of the 24 were broken, but thankfully there does not seem to be any damage to the hubs.
While under the car it seemed to be a good time to check the fuel system. The fuel pump was the original and the filter was two decades old, so both those items got replaced. Debated about the Mercedes pump, or the 044, and went with the Mercedes pump because it fits with my HP goals.
Should be a tight fit in back, but I think I can get 275s mounted up and under the fenders. Should be 1mm narrower than the 255s on the current twist replicas.
