That will work but it's not the best or safest way to do it.

1. You will have gas vapor escaping there at all times and the back of your car will constantly smell like gas.

2. The filter will get wet and dirty very quickly and need replacing often.

3. If you happen to be in a rollover accident you will probably go up in flames.

On a track car you can get away with a tip valve and filter but on a street car you are better off doing this:

1. Remove all the evap stuff back to the pipe at the firewall.

2. Extend that pipe with rubber gas pipe to your air filter box.

3. Drill a hole and fit a grommet on your air filter box so the extended pipe fit in snugly.

This way any fumes get sucked back into the engine, your car won't smell like gas, you don't have to worry about contamination and you don't have an extra filter to change.
