Unhappy Clunking Noise in rear.

Hello guys,
I got a clunking noise in the rear. It seems to be coming from the drivers side. It just started today, as I take off it's loud "clunk clunk clunk" as i speed up it mellows out " clunk clunk" soon as I hit 40mph it stops. But if i get on it ,1bar on stock gauge (no boost) it starts again.

I don't know what caused it to start, but its annoying and i'm afraid to drive it now.

The only thing I can think of is cv/halfshaft.

Anyone have any suggestions, help, comments?

Thats right its the cv's. does it speed up as you speed up? You can get them rebuilt and repacked or replaced. I would not drive too much until you take care of the problem though.

Thats not bad. It looks like you will have to do it, but you can. I had mine done a while back and it was well over 200$ so this looks pretty good. Ask Danno or some of the elders their opinions?.

I did mine a while back. No replacement parts necessary - I removed the old ones, completely cleaned and regreased (packed) them (none of the components seemed damaged in anyway) and then remounted them on the opposite axles they came off (just to reverse all the pressure points). Hasn't made a noise since

Gary.

yes, rotating them is exactly what you want to do.

Good advice Gary

Yes the driver's side seems to fail first, as it's close to the heat of the exhaust. I replaced both of mine last year, the passenger side one was still good, no play or noise. When I took out the drivers side it had lots of play and the same clunk/tick noise you described. I still have the passenger side one if you want a cheap replacement, and don't want the mess of repacking yours. Paragon has the best proce I found for new ones.

yeah, i did what gary did, just took em apart, cleaned, and repacked with grease. they did have some wear, but not enough to warrant new parts. id say try that road first, itll only take like 4 hours do do them if youve never done em before, im sure i could do one side in one hour now....

they aren't horribly expensive, if you are looking for the most convenience, you can buy a fully prepared (read: assembled, with half-shaft, cvs, grease, boots, etc etc) and ready-to-install (including brand new bolts) ones - approx 1xx each...

Hey guys,
After I got all worried about it, it quit. Ever since I went to lunch at work it quit doing it. I don't know if it just got in a bind or something and started clunking. However I was just checking them out and none of the boots are ripped or anything. Rotating the tire only makes a driveline noise.

So should I just wait and see if it does it again?

I've been waiting for ~8 months and 4k miles for the same issue to pop back on mine... it hasn't. And FWIW, www.raxles.com had the best deal on NEW (not rebuilt/refurbished/remanufactured) halfshafts when I was looking. They came Highly recomended to boot... so if it Does creep back up on you, just another option to consider.

It is not common for the cv to make noise and then stop and then last for a long time afterwards repacked or not.So be prepared. Another often over looked cause are worn parking brake shoe parts that come loose in the rear drum section.FWIW in a pinch Garys trick of swaping axles has been used sucessfully more than once. 5 spds only ,autos have different lenght axles for each side.
