Default question about leak from crossover flange

This is the factory 2-piece crossover, with the separate wastegate inlet pipe. I can feel a leak behind the triangular flange on the crossover side. I have slow spool up...I don't get full boost until well over 4k in 2nd gear and I was wondering if this could be the cause.

Looking with a mirror, it looks like there are some welds and some area with no welds (Sorry I know the pic isn't great).

Is this flange supposed to be welded on or just sealed with a donut seal like the wastegate pipe? Based on this and other pics I've seen, it looks like it's supposed to be a loose flange with a seal. But then it looks like maybe someone tried to weld it?

Sorry but I have to agree with you ...
That is a terrible picture
That is not a factory weld but some putz that couldn't weld

Yeah those 2 flanges should be free to rotate to any desired position. They are sealed with a fiberous doughnut which provides an excellent seal. It's not uncommon to see cracks/pinholes in the pipes in that area. I bet those welds are to repair exhaust pipe failure rather then gasket failure.

Thanks guys...after another look I saw that the 2 flanges are not flat against each other. There is a gap of a couple of mm that's widest at the bottom - although the leak seems to be from the top.

Well it turns out some genius did indeed weld the flange in place on the crossover side. When I slid the other side back I can see that the wg inlet pipe doesn't line up flat, there's a gap at the top, so that's presumably the leak. But I can't see the seal until I loosen up the WG. It should be fine I think, as long as I can move the whole WG a little I should be able to get it to line up flat.

Is the donut seal a generic thing I can find in the stores or do I have to get the exact part #?

Anywhere from 13 to 21 dollars Sunset of Pelican parts is where I checked
Hope that helps

It was the seal. The old one was in pretty bad shape. Put in a new one today and the leak is gone. The pipe seems to be in good shape so it's not clear why someone felt they had to weld the flange in place, but it doesn't seem to matter, it seals up just fine.

I don't think so...it felt like a small leak and it was a long way from there. I suspected the test pipe, which I have not been able to remove from the crossover. But I have tightened the flare nut back down. If it was leaking, it's not now.
