I'd love to put a drain in the fitting between the stock and the KISS cooler to drain them, but haven't done anything about it to this point.

So that's 2 quarts of old oil that stays in the cooler when you do an oil change. Is that old oil staying in there a problem? Mine will be race only so it will have very frequent oil changes, but that also means that it will be subjected to lots of heat...

Was posting this as Michael's post came in... That's what I was wondering... anyone put a drain in there?

I tend to tip the car to the passenger side when draining anyway. The cooler is higher than the pan so given enough time it should drain out. The lines are bit low though, so maybe you get some remainder stuck there.

The Fluidyne cooler I just installed has a bottom port to use to empty the oil out of the cooler core...

what model did you get and is it the only cooler for the oil in your v8? Where are you mounting it?

Look in my LS build thread here for pics of it mounted. It's 22" long by 6.75" high by 3" deep. It's the only cooler I'm running and I have it front mounted.

FWIW at this point, I know the answer to the original question about the "void" in the new cooler and lines when it is first installed. The lines and cooler will immediately fill with oil when you first start the car. While it's true that the thermostat will be closed, the coolers and lines are still in the pressure circuit. The air in the new cooler and lines will be compressed by the ~75psi of oil pressure instantly and the lines and cooler will fill rapidly. When I first installed my KISS setup several years ago, I had the misfortune to receive a defective Mocal cooler that had a pinhole leak. It didn't take more than 10-15 seconds after startup for the car to dump a ton of oil (maybe a pint?) on the garage floor. So yeah, the cooler will definitely fill rapidly after you start the car, even if it's dead cold and the thermostat is closed.

I have the KISS oïl cooler mounted in front of the radiator (no AC) and I typically see 175-180 temps on 75-80F days during a 20 min DE run. The readings are at the oïl pan, using a Zeitronix logger.

I have been told that this is unusually cool as most run 210-220 with an extra cooler behind the foglight - not sure if the front mount makes that much of a difference.

175-180 F on a DE event seems too low. This means that also on street you do not see higher temperatures. Ideally the oil should see 200 F in order the condensation products would effectively evaporate. If the oil does not reache regularly that temperature, this is bad for the oil and engine. Or your sensor might be located in some place where the readings are cooler.

As the 951 do not have factory oil temperature gauges and everyone puts them in different places,this also might have impact on the readings and they are not fully comparable between each other.

For these engines, 175-180°F is very good in my book. We can always warm the engine up until 210°F to burn residues accumulated during lack of use then drive the car at full load at 180°F.

If the cooler is appropriately placed and exposed to a continuous flow of fresh air, the engine is always going to run cooler than driving around in town where oil temp may vary between 200 and 210°F even under the slightest loads, because of little to no air cooling down the cooler.

Considering that these cars came with thermostats that open at 80C (176F) it is logical that under normal driving also oil is around those temperatures (or just above). However, if you do not live in hot climate and in spring and autumn often drive the car when the ambient temperatures are in 40s and 50s, these are not ideal conditions for the oil. Of course, if you change it regularly, this should be no big concern.

Default Changing oil with a KISS aux oil cooler?

Does any of this matter when changing oil with the KISS aux oil cooler? Do you have to add in extra oil or does the oil stay in the cooler so no extra oil is needed when changing the oil? I am considering trying to change the oil on my 1989 944 Turbo with a KISS aux oil cooler. How much oil will I need for the oil change with a KISS aux oil cooler?

Yeah, I'm around 7-8 quarts now, but there is some that does get trapped in the coolers.
