Default 944 Turbo S

Hi, I am looking to buy a 944 Turbo S for my collection. How do I tell if its a Turbo S or just normal Turbo? Also, what will the current going price be in USD for a good car?

In '88, they made both the S and the regular Turbo. All Turbos from '89 car (or '90 or '91 outside the US) are Turbo Ss.

Turbo Ss will have extra little triangle metal gussets in front of the shock towers connecting to the frame rails and will have fully rolled rear fender lips (reach inside and feel).

Turbo Ss have bigger brakes and the 16" Clubsport wheels.

Turbo Ss usually have dual air bags and split folding rear seats... but some non-Ss have that too... So, use that more as a test to exclude a non-S, not prove it is an S.

This VIN decoder can be useful too: http://www.renntech.org/images/vin_decoder/

Don't worry if you don't see certain features, for example my '89 does not have split seats, headlight washers and possibly a few of the other "S" features. That's pretty common. All the '89s have the important performance upgrades though.

Turbo S (1988 - Silver Rose exterior w/ burgundy plaid fabric interior unique to this year only) and 89 and later turbos (Many color combos) w/ same S specifications as other have mentioned above. It will also have a 10 speakers radio system standard, LSD standard, and a larger turbo with the #8 vs. #6 turbine. Do a search as there are many topics and useful links for these cars. Good luck.

Yes, in Europe it's only the 88 car that had the "S" designation and sunroof delete, everything that came after up to 91 is just a 250 bhp turbo with options.

They made the 88 turbo S in other colors as well, but in much smaller numbers.
