Josh can "give" you a 3.0 specific M-tune.

Personally not trying to win HP war.
No sense in slamming some one who has already done the build and has real life numbers to fall back on. However I did not go with a 2.7 l head but a 2.5 l head thus the differnce in gaskets. I am glad that you were able to do it cheaper. But I will stick with my numbers, if all you want is a reliable motor with out worrying about HP then the 2.5 l motor is fairly bullet proof and with a few after market bolt ons, approximately $4,000 form Lindsey, will net you about 340 rwhp. So why go through the trouble of a unique engine build.

My car is not set up for maximum HP but for mid range performance, 3500 rpm to 6000 rpm, after that it runs out of legs rather quickly. The other items like knifed crank and and aluminum fly wheel are to reduce your rotational inertia, to have a faster revving engine. If I am not mistaken it still requires an after market ECU set up and they are not free.

Yea, me neither. 350rwhp with lots of low/mid range torque and long term reliability is what I am looking for.

There are different ways to skin a cat. I never built my car to be a HP queen or claim fastest car in my town. I merely went to the most reputable builder and used the best parts that I could afford. There are a few things I went overboard on, but that was my choice, and the price reflected.

Its neat to see other ways of getting the higher displacement, but I didn't want to deal with the potential issues that could arise when doing unique builds like refresh. And while I can work on pretty much any aspect of my car, building the engine is something I don't have much experience with.

One difference (from what I've seen) is that I tend to treat my project as not just an engine, but a whole car. I addressed pretty much every area that would see increased stress with the increased performance.

I think you may be misinterpreting my idea of a "proper" build.

No issues here Darwin. I honestly love your car as you have done an amazing job with it. I am a big fan of your build thread and I have great respect for your build approach. Just presenting different 3L build options

Thanks! And I like the alternate approaches to 3L engines, too. (And your car!)

My idea of a "proper" build pertains to the car as a whole, and not just the engine/ECU. Factoring in the fact that the car can handle the increased performance. You can make the engine cost that much, but you're buying pretty high end parts if you do.

After talking to Chris White about how I planned to use my car and what kind of power I wanted to make, I pulled out my bad stock motor and dropped in the LS1.

Why not buy a corvette that has modern suspension and brakes to compliment the LS power?

Here we go....

Because I already owned the 951 outright. Because I'd already put several thousand dollars in safety gear that was welded into the car. Because it's far cheaper to do a motor swap into the 951 than try to sell a 951 with a bad motor, then buy a used C5 Z06. Because I like having something that confuses the Porsche puristas. Because it's bad *** to have a 951 that sounds cool, make eleventy billion HP on rat **** street fuel, not have to worry about it breaking on track no matter how hard I beat on it and have replacement parts cost 1/3 of stock.

Gotta say, these are probably the most compelling points of your argument! I love the sound of a well modified V8!

What happens when eleventy billion horsepower isn't enough? Do you have to go to Congress?

a 340hp 2.5 motor will be a dog on an autocross course. Nothing off the line and you are driving a 2.5l NA with the equivalent of a sock stuffed in the intake until you get to 3500.

The project the poster is after is a good autocross set up - more displacement is the answer. With a smallish turbo you will get better performance from the displacement and quicker spool than stock.

For a track motor or street motor I might agree with you on some points. but in this case the motor needs a rebuild anyway....
