Default Noob to the 944 turbo, need a bit of advice on a purchase

I'm thinking of investing in a 944 Turbo. Wondering if there's any easy way to tell on an ad if a 1988 is a Turbo or Turbo S. Were all Turbo S models scripted with the large "S" on the rear? Any way on the option sticker to tell? Of course, before buying I'll check the engine code.

If it is a pre-S 1988, is the only difference the #8 scroll on the turbo, and can that be refitted without much work?

thx,

There was a thread about how to know if it's the S model a while back, can't find it right now. Edit: Start with this thread:

But there are quite a few visible and some not so visible features, and others can be swapped out. With the swapped out option/s, you'd have to cross reference with other area of the car to really pin point if it is. Good luck.

The best way to tell if a Turbo S is really a Turbo S is by the frame gussets. They are kinda hard to fake, although I believe Lart has sold a few sets. Here's a picture of what to look for:

The differences between the S and non-S are the gussets mentioned, M030 package standard, AOR transaxle, #8 hotside on turbo, DME chip, I'm probably missing some stuff here performance-wise. I think there are differences in standard options as well, like the 10-speaker stereo.

Yup, I was going to mention that triangulated area to stiffen the shock towers on the turbo S. But even this area can be a mod and be added to non S cars...not likely but possible. Post some pix of the potential car and we'll tell you if it is or not.

This is quite helpful. I think I'll be able to figure it out from here. The link for the Turbo S is very useful. Learning a lot about the differences.
