Default 86T brake upgrade w/ 16" rims

Hey guys,

I have an 86T with stock calipers. I'm doing more DE events now and want to put some effort in to the brakes.

I have a significant investment in wheels and I need everything to fit with 16" early offset fuchs/phonedials.

I've heard that the 86 spindles are a bit fragile and that running 87+ spindle/rotor/hub is the way to go. If I get an 87 spindle, will it have any effect on which wheels/calipers I can use?

Also, what are the largest calipers/rotors I can fit under 16" rims? Are there any worthwhile upgrades over the 86T calipers?

Thanks guys, I've spent all day reading the forums and I'm more confused than ever, hoping you can help clear things up.

I don't think you can run the turbo S calipers up front with stock 16" rims.

BTW, if you need an extra set of factory Fuchs, let me know.

I've seen Big Reds under a 16" wheel on an Audi before. Just need the right sized rotor and clearance on the wheel spokes.

I've been reading that maybe S4 calipers will fit 7x16s with a 1/4" spacer. Anyone do this with the Big Reds or Big Blacks?

It looks like 87+ spindles/hub/rotor and S4 calipers might just bolt all together with the use of a camber plate and a caliper adapter. Starting to look like this might be the best option I can fit.

I have Turbo S calipers on my 86 with phone dials, no problems.

The 928 S4 calipers are the same as 88 Turbo S calipers.

And no spacer necessary for the turbo S calipers? Okay cool.

Hey guys, proceeding along here. Have some more questions.

I bought some used parts here from some rennlists guys and they look good. I have a pair of Turbo S spindles and Turbo S calipers (the S4s).

Turns out that the calipers bolt right up to the spindles without the use of an adapter. This was an unexpected surprise, I didn't realize I was getting what I assume to be m030 spindles.

I still need to get hubs. Should I be getting m030 hubs or non-m030 hubs?

Also, will I have any issues mounting the m030 spindles to essentially stock 86 turbo steering or other mounting points?

Looks like I should get the m030 hubs and that the steering knuckles will attach identically to the stock 86T hardware. Sound about right?
