How much faster do you think your Boxster is over your 951 at your local track? (Laguna Seca maybe from your avatar pic?)

I daily drive a 2000 325hp Boxster, and I love it. The handling is incredible with just a few simple mods and a good alignment, and it does very well autoXing.

I love how easy it is to drive in town, how great the AC is...but I miss driving my modded 951 every time I get on the highway. I swapped in a 996 engine into my boxster and its STILL no match for my 951 after 70.

Two totally different cars, my heart is with the 951 though. I'd never part with it.

~$10k for the base turbo kit. Add a couple more for the ~550 hp kits. Not too far off from getting a Vitesse kit, exhaust, wastegate, supporting parts, etc. A turbo'd Cayman with the engine in the right spot is a formidable car. I'd do a turbo on mine--except for California's smog laws.

not the way I see it.

How much a base used gayman S 35-50k?

plus turbo kit $ 10k

still cost a around 60k max

buy a cheap 951 less than 10K
4k in exhaust plumbing
dump 7k in supension
another 2k in wheels
2k lsd tranny
build a syd stroker <10k
rogue M tune 2K
run E-85 21 psi all day long

about 37k max for a 450rwhp

the gayman may still faster in turns but brute acceleration, no contest

Dont forget to factor that the 951 engine is a grenade over 400hp, never ending ability to randomly spring an oil leak and the constant maintenance. It gets just as expensive really quick.

Anyway, why are we comparing a 25 year old Front engine RWD Porsche to a modern Mid engine RWD Porsche? Because of the brutal straight line acceleration? Hop on any 1 liter sport bike, and I promise you'll have to relearn the meaning of brutal.

for the low income guys like me that want a chance into club racing or road racing or a good looking ageless car, very few cars for the price, do offer what the 951 has to offer, balance, high torque and styling. Now I haven't open my mouth in a long time, but if you know what you are doing and it took me a while to master it, 21psi on a stock block is a reality, iam not bull****ting i can prove it, if you can't or others can't that's their problem, but for me to have another car that can give me what the 951 does, I would have to be rich like tony garcia or win the lottery. I can strap a rocket to my butt and I will go fast or I can turn like a gokart in s2000 but they still not a 951.

I'll pick the 951 any day over a gayman or a gayxster

Im definitely not a rich guy either, but Ive had my 951 for 7 years so far. Ive had many turbos on it, and its pretty reliable up to about 350hp. Whether you get that number with a tiny turbo and a lot of boost (like your 21 psi ) or with a huge turbo and moderate boost....The engine does hold up with street use.

I'm more of a guy who just likes a car and improves on its already good characteristics. Why people like to shoot other cars down and say theirs is better, I'll never know. 928 vs 951, 951 vs 911, 951 vs ford gt......etc. Its kinda like watching creationists argue with evolution theorists, its never ending and full of butt hurt.

I just love the 951. Its definitely a love hate relationship though

[QUOTEI'll pick the 951 any day over a gayman or a gayxster[/QUOTE]

Personally, I like both cars for different reasons. Have owned 3 951's and a 944s. Just blew up my last 951 on the track. I don't bad mouth Carrera GTs because I can't afford them and/or a modded 951 is just as fast. I don't quite get the homophobic reference--that was more prevalent when Porsche first announced the name. Most people have moved on. I guess you have some personal issues you need to work out....

don't quote me on the homo thing, has been around for ages, you know they say some like to be push from the rear..blah blah blah. but anyway you are probably correct i shouldn't be badmouthing such a car like the gayman because i can't afford it.

ahhh we poor people are so full of envy.

The cayman handles better than the 951? Who's the authority on this?

I think novices and beginners can see more of their driving potential in caymans and boxters, but once you get more experienced drivers, it becomes a bit more fuzzy. The cayman and boxter certainly do things better than the 944 and vice versa. As well, each has it's shortcomings from the factory. The fact that the jury is still out on this comparo of entry level Porsches from 25 years apart is pretty amazing, though. You don't see anyone mentioning the tradeoffs between an early C4 vette and a new C6, the C6 is better in every way.

Yeah I think a properly set up 951 would take a cayman a on all but the most technical if tracks and even then it would be more a driver's race.
I can assure you this is not so. I can't beat a (very) well driven stock one.

These new cars are flat out phenomenal in terms of handling and stopping. It really is cheating compared to a 951. We're lucky to have an antiquated abs if that. They have so many gizmos that drive the car for you, they're way easier than our cars to drive on the limit. Having said that, a Cayman will possibly have a slightly narrower window once you move right up close to that edge in terms of a short wheelbase mid-engine car. Having driven many different models of the current Porsche lineup (inc 991) I can say that these are a very good representation of what today's technology can bring to the table.
Do I want one over a well sorted 951....nope. After all the bells and whistles...they're a bit antiseptic for me.
