Default 944 turbo purchase

Hey guys I got a few questions. I found a 86 turbo for sale for $1500. From the ad the guy says it won't start. It don't have a key but he had one made. Also the belt is not broken. He thinks it's something with the ignition. I've seen running turbos in my area for about $10k, is this potentially a good purchase or should I steer clear and buy the better car? Also I curious how cheap/expensive these cars are to mod, like suspension and more HP. Thanks guys

What's the rest of the car like? Miles? Tires? Might be good for a v8 swap. Take a look at Clarks Garage, it could be something simple like the dme relay.

Haven't seen the car or any pics. I'll be going tomorrow. I wanna keep the stock engine, that's why I was asking if it's a good buy or go for the better example. Also if I was going for the better option is $10k a fair price?

for 1500 you cant go wrong. if everything is there and you are competent then you should be able to get it running. Now, if you cant do the work yourself i would steer clear.

Honestly everything can go wrong, no start could be from simple srs to broken timing belt, there is not such thing as a cheap Porsche specially a 951.

Dude, for 1500, grab it, and if it has problems you can't fix, at least you have a parts car...

If you are cool with having a parts car or a project car it might be worth it. But you need to understand, a well sorted 951 will probably cost you 10K within the first year, including purchase price. So you could buy a 10K car and not have to do much with it for a year or so. Or you could buy a 1500K car, and then sink 8500 into it starting immediately. Maybe you'll be lucky - maybe it's really undervalued, but still at that price you are looking at a project car.

That said, you still have to be careful even with a 10K car. You want documented history - that is the key. Porsches are very consistent - everything has a point where it will fail. So it's simple: either the seller has done the maintenance (and has paperwork to prove it) or you will be doing it - guaranteed.

Do yourself a favour - look through the recent for sale posts here on rennlist. You see good cars with well documented history for less than 10K all the time. Now, look at the kind of detail people typically provide in their FS ads here on rennlist. That is the kind of info you need to be getting about these cars you're looking at, in order for us to be able to tell you if they could be good deals or not

I'm in Washington... I'll be going to look tomorrow at the $1500 one. I did however look at a 951 that was asking $10900 and boy was I surprised at how horribly maintained it was. The dash was totally cracked. A couple of the buttons were pushed thru and u can't access them. The whole interior basically was trash. The exterior needed just as much work. The paint was so faded and scratched I'd have to repaint the whole car. All the rubber trim was pretty toast as well. Only positive was how good it drove based on the care. Engine pulled harder then I was expecting and the suspension felt pretty good even though I'm sure it's got worn out parts.

I also found a 87 944S 120k miles with quite a few upgrades to engine suspension and exterior. From the pics it looks pretty nicely taken care of. And he's asking $7600. I'll take a look at that one too.

I've never driven a 944 before today and I was pleasantly surprised with how the car feels. Looking forward to driving a better example.

Dude,
If you have the funds, you would be silly to not grab that 951 for 1500. I am new to 951 ownership as well. I used to sneak drives from the dealers back in the day but never made it happen. I got BMW, then another, then a track car etc. etc.etc.

25 years and 22 BMW's later I got the black 88 Turbo S Porsche that I wanted since 8th grade, and 24k dollars later she is looking and driving like I want.

Point is, if its a labor of love, who cares about price/value. No one NEEDS that euro bumper but it looks way better and we wants it... lol.

But if you are lookin for a whip to get you around, get a backup parts car... For 1500 you cnt go wrong. BTW, if you wanna sell the fog lights let me know, I need a pair.

Kai

K guys I checked out the $1500 951 and it was a pile to say the least. The rims that were on the car were too small so all 4 calipers r basically destroyed. The body has dents all over and the interior needs a lot of attention, not to mention the car don't start.

But I did look at and drove another 86 turbo that was in very good condition inside out. Body no dents inside no cracks or rips. Also the engine was replaced with a newer 87 turbo and ran very strong. Here's the ad. Do u guys think it's a good buy for $7500?
